Out of which, 11 million are Malaysian numbers.

Besides Malaysia, the leak includes accounts from 84 countries. According to the source, countries with the highest number of hacked accounts are Egypt with 44,823,547, Italy with 35,677,323, and the US with 32,315,282. Malaysia has the 12th highest number with 11,675,894.

This is an unsettling amount of users affected by the WhatsApp leak. The information can be used by attackers for phishing attacks, and WhatsApp has around two billion monthly active users worldwide.

Upon request, the seller of WhatsApp’s database shared a sample of data with Cybernews researchers — the ones who first reported the leak. As a sample, the seller shared 1097 UK and 817 US user numbers. With more investigation, the numbers included in the sample are confirmed WhatsApp users.

The seller, however, did not specify how they obtained the database. But quite often, massive data dumps posted online turn out to be obtained by scraping — which violates WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.

“In this age, we all leave a sizeable digital footprint — and tech giants like Meta should take all precautions and means to safeguard that data... We should ask whether an added clause of ‘scraping or platform abuse is not permitted in the Terms and Conditions’ is enough. Threat actors don’t care about those terms, so companies should take rigorous steps to mitigate threats and prevent platform abuse from a technical standpoint,” said the Head of Cybernews research team Mantas Sasnauskas.

Cybernews reached out to WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, but received no immediate response. But for now, it’s recommended to remain wary of any calls from unknown numbers, unsolicited calls, and messages. Don’t click or open any suspicious links and enable two-step verification to further secure your WhatsApp account if you haven’t done so. — SoyaCincau

KUALA LUMPUR: The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) has traced 31,598 entities comprising individuals, businesses, companies and others who have yet to declare their actual incomes.

In a statement today, IRB said the amount of direct tax leakage suffered by the country was estimated at RM665 million and the significant amount could have a negative impact on the country’s economic stability if it is not curbed immediately.

It said the entities were identified based on asset ownership as well as their ability to secure financing and/or security valued at RM500,000 and above.

The IRB said the entities, in particular 23,751 individuals, are advised to voluntarily appear at their nearest IRB branches to register their income tax files and declare their income.

It said these entities shall be given a grace period of one month from June 15 to July 15, 2022 and upon expiration of the grace period, the IRB would enforce tax audits as well as civil and criminal investigations to those that had failed to file tax declaration forms, submitted false statements and evaded tax.

It added that the criminal probes would result in charges being filed in court under Sections 112, 113 and 114 of the Income Tax Act 1967 for non-compliance and tax evasion.-Bernama

https://www.thesundaily.my/home/irb-traces-...comes-NG9329582
How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Msia ?

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Malaysia?

A bathroom renovation is one of the top home improvement projects in Malaysia, and is a great way to give your house a New Year’s makeover.

[attachmentid=11064615]

The process generally involves the following:

Hacking and demolishing the old tiles (floor and/or wall)
Waterproofing the floor
Plumbing and piping
Wetwork such as constructing a raised divider or shower cubby
Wiring for the water heater, lighting and plug points
Tiling on floor and wall
Installing new doors and windows or shower screens
Installing new bathroom fittings and accessories
Painting work

With the average Malaysian home being around 110 sq m, bathrooms are usually in the region of up to 7 sq m. At this size, you can expect a general breakdown of costs as follows, bearing in mind these are just estimates and will vary according to bathroom size, materials and other factors.

Hacking and demolishing: RM2,000
Consider removing cracked, dull and outdated tiles. Depending on your request, the contractor will hack the wall and/or floor tiles, which would include dismantling existing fixtures such as the sink and toilet tank.

Waterproofing: RM1,500
After the old tiles are hacked, the contractor will level and waterproof the whole floor with material that prevents water from penetrating or permeating through. It might take some time to be fully cured before moving on to the next step.

New plumbing and piping: RM1,000
This is an optional step if you intend to change the layout, such as moving the sink to a different location in the bathroom. It might also be needed if you want to relocate water outlets, such as switching from a bathtub to a standing shower.

Wetwork: RM2,000
This is a term for building something using cement, laying bricks, plastering and skim coating. It also refers to the process of building a recessed shelf in the shower area, a new concrete top for the sink, a wall or floor divider to separate wet and dry areas, as well as installing tiles on the floor and wall.

Tiling: RM3,000
Go with the porcelain tiles that are anti-slip and slightly textured for the floor. They are more durable and easy to clean. For the walls, opt for ceramic tiles all the way up to the ceiling or just 2m high to reduce costs. The rest of the wall can be painted.

Bathroom fittings and accessories: RM2,200
The price for bathroom fittings such as the sink, toilet tank and bathtub varies depending on the size, type and brand. The same applies to accessories such as your faucets, showerhead and bidet.

Glass shower screen and door: RM1,800
If you are currently using a shower curtain, consider an upgrade by installing a glass shower screen or door. The tempered glass will be a bit costly as it requires proper mounting and sealing, but it is durable, easy to clean, and will make your bathroom more luxurious.

Cabinetry: RM2,000
Additional storage cabinets can be installed over and under the sink, or above the toilet tank. Some homeowners opt for full-height, narrow cabinets and floating shelves at dry sections of the bathroom to store towels and toilet rolls.

Plaster ceiling: RM1,200
Some bathrooms in old landed houses have very high ceilings with exposed piping or water heaters near the top. Freshen up the look by covering them up with a plaster ceiling.

Lighting: RM400
Install an LED light in a cool daylight tone as the main ambient lighting. You can also add a fancier task light above the sink and mirror, and a hidden LED strip light under cabinets to create a hotel-like mood.

Keeping it affordable

Here are some handy tips to keep costs lower:

Don’t change the layout
Moving the toilet from one corner of the bathroom to another may look good, but it will add significant costs as the piping will need to be moved beforehand, requiring hacking and new waterproofing.

Don’t change the size of the bathroom
Similarly, making major changes to your floor plan will significantly increase your costs.

Repair instead of replacing tiles

Consider repairing damaged tiles if your contractor can find a matching replacement. Alternatively, you may choose to retile just the wall or floor.

Don’t make last-minute changes
As with any major construction project, it’s best to plan well beforehand and stick with it, rather than make changes midway.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...st-in-malaysia/

I apologise to the Dewan and promise to not do it again.”

Hishammuddin used his vape device despite signs in the Parliament building stating: ‘No smoking, no vaping’.

The signage can also be seen as vehicles enter the main entrance of Parliament.

DAP’s Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi raised the matter during today’s Parliament sitting, referring to Standing Order 41 (d) that states a MP is not allowed to smoke in the Dewan Rakyat when a sitting is in session.

“According to Twitter, it was raised that Sembrong MP was vaping on Monday when the transport minister was speaking.

“The home minister (Hishammuddin) himself has already admitted it on his Twitter account.

“I think it is better that we should request for Sembrong to officially apologise in Parliament. Thank you,” said Wong.

The Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Rashid Hasnon however only said they will look further into the matter and proceeded to call the next minister for his winding-up speech.

Is our food expiry date law outdated?

Food08 Feb 2019 6:01 AM

Love Food Hate Waste: Is our food expiry date law outdated?
By JULIE WONG (The Star)

In Malaysia, it is an offence to sell food past the stipulated expiry date.

IN 2016, the world’s first supermarket selling expired food opens in Copenhagen, aiming to cut down the 700,000 metric tonnes of food waste in Denmark.

WeFood sells expired food and food rejected by other grocers for 30% to 50% cheaper than market price. At a time when food waste, zero hunger and global warming are on every country’s agenda, the opening generated a global buzz. WeFood is now even listed on VisitCopenhagen’s website.

Selling food past its best before date is however not a radical new idea invented by the Danes. The Americans have been running salvage food stores and discount groceries way before WeFood. A 2014 article in modernfarmer.com estimated that there were at least 500 salvage groceries nationwide. It is thought to have started in the ever-thrifty Amish community.

Some of these stores have been around for 50 years and they are in every state.

This thriving surplus food store scene is possible because the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not ban the sale of food past its expiration date. In fact, food products do not even need to have an expiry date – the exception is infant formula.

WeFood is a supermarket that sells expired food and food rejected by other grocers; it offers customers cheaper options and reduces food waster.

“Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety and are not required by Federal law,” its Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website states. Manufacturers however can provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality.

The FDA takes a rather relaxed approach to the various product expiry terms. In its newsletter Food Facts, it states:

• A Sell by date indicates that a product should not be sold after that date if the buyer is to have it at its best quality.

• A Use by or Best by date is the maker’s estimate of how long a product will keep at its best quality.

“They are quality dates only, not safety dates. If stored properly, a food product should be safe, wholesome and of good quality after its Use by or Best by date,” it says.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates food loss and waste at 30% of the food supply – lost or wasted at the retail and consumer levels. It acknowledges that confusion about themeaning of dates displayed on labels is a reason why some consumers and retailers throw away wholesome food.

To reduce consumer confusion and wasted food, FSIS recommends that food manufacturers and retailers that apply product dating use a “Best if used by” date as research shows that this phrase conveys to consumers that the product will be of best quality if used by the date shown, but still safe to eat after the date.

“Foods not exhibiting signs of spoilage should be wholesome and may be sold, purchased, donated and consumed beyond the labeled “Best if used by” date, it explains.

In stark contrast, it is an offence to sell food beyond its expiry date in Malaysia.

Act 281 Section 14 of the Food Act 1983 prohibits the sale of food “not of the nature, substance and quality demanded” and sale of expired food falls under this. Upon conviction offenders face a stiff jail term up to five years or a fine, or both.

Copenhagen’s WeFood has become a popular tourist stop for food waste fighters like The Lost Food Project founder Suzanne Mooney (left) and MySaveFood secretariat head Dr Ainu Husna MS Suhaimi.

Also, the Food Regulations 1985 mandates that all food packaging must bear a date marking. Malaysians – with our love for simplification – tend to not make a distinction between the date marking terms allowed by the Regulations; “Expiry date”, “Use by”, “Consume by” and “Best before” are all taken to mean the same thing, that is, the expiry date. We’d rather be safe than sorry. This simplified, ultra-safe, kiasu (and kiasi) approach however may cause more food waste.

(Note that these are all terms that provide a protection guideline to consumers. The other terms provided by Codex Alimentarious, the UN body that sets international standards, like “Sell by” which is a guideline for retailers, are not officially used here.)

The Food Regulations defines “expiry date” in relation to a food product to mean “the date after which the food when kept in accordance with any storage conditions set out in the label of such food, may not retain the quality attributes normally expected by a consumer”.

In other words, an expired food product may still be safe to eat but its original nutritional values and taste may not be met. At any rate, it is illegal in Malaysia to trade in expired food products or donate them to charity.

This means that a lot of perfectly safe to eat food are fated to be sent to the municipal landfill and contributing to the waste problem when it could be channeled to feed the hungry, or for resale at discount food outlets.

Any supermarket, food retailer or supplier wishing to avoid wasting food must donate the food before they expire. This will result in a shorter retail shelf life for the products and the need for a complex stock management system, which no one wants to go into.

“I can donate expired food products to charity but not before the expiry date,” one food import company director said. “We are a business and not a charity. If the expired goods cannot be donated they will be disposed of.”

Another food supplier explained that most supermarkets in Malaysia will not bear the risk of having unsold expired stock. Hence, they only agree to carry food products they can return to supplier after the expiry date.

“About 90% of the food products we supply to supermarkets are done on such an arrangement. For a food supplier, the supermarket business is not really sustainable as we bear the burden of dealing with unsold and expired goods.”

Where do expired food go? Not to heaven for sure. The dumpsite option is hell and considered a last recourse. The options are for owners to consume them themselves – while it’s illegal to trade in expired food products, there’s no law against consuming expired food – or distribute them among family and friends but this option has its limits as many Malaysians are repulsed by and suspicious of expired food; donate to farmers as animal feed; or channeling to a composting facility – in that order.

Clearly, the authorities and stakeholders can work together to help eliminate food waste and avert an environmental disaster as the problem will only get bigger as cities grow unless measures are taken to check it.

A review of current food laws on food expiry dates can be a big step forward.

After all, an expiry date is an arbitrary best practice date set by the manufacturer and not an exact science.

If you sell expired food in one country you are celebrated as a food hero but in another you can be thrown into jail.

Food for thought: if the expiry date on your can of sardines is today, is it safe to eat today and bad tomorrow?

Jalan Raja Chulan - Serani Row

High-rise project planned in place of Serani Row
Proposed development includes six residential towers, parking facility and commercial podium

Metro CentralBy BAVANI M bavanim@thestar.com.my

SIX multi-storey towers with almost 4,000 serviced apartment units are planned for Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur, taking over the spot where Serani Row once stood.

The row of eight old houses that used to be the abode of the Eurasian community close to 100 years ago was recently demolished and the area has been cordoned off for development.

However, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Town Planning Department senior deputy director Nik Mastura Diyana Nik Mohamad said no development order was issued yet but DBKL received an application for planning permission.

The proposed development comprises two 80-storey towers (936 units), two 66-storey towers (1,548 units) and two 60-storey towers (1,404 units).

A 10-storey parking facility and a three-storey commercial podium are also in the plans.

On the project’s gross development value, Nik Mastura said it was too soon to say as it depended on several factors including plot ratio.

“The developer is asking for a plot ratio of 1:10, but we are trying to keep it at 1:7.

“It is currently at the One-Stop Centre stage and the committee is deliberating the proposed plan, so nothing is confirmed,” she added.

Nik Mastura said the committee was waiting for the recommendations from several agencies, including the National Heritage Department (JWN), the National Security Council (JKN) and the Public Works Institute (Ikram).

“JWN is concerned about Bukit Nanas, which is a heritage zone and gazetted forest reserve; also the derelict Serani Row – though it is not a gazetted heritage building, it nonetheless has some historical value,’’ Nik Mastura said.

“As for Ikram and JKN, the land is located near a slope, hence we need to look at the safety aspect as well,” she added.

The 3ha area where the project

is located is a commercial zone; despite the fact that it is nearby the Heritage Trail 3 project that links to Bukit Nanas and Muzium Telekom.

End of an era

Earlier this month, netizens living in the city captured the demolition of the row of derelict houses along Jalan Raja Chulan that was abandoned for decades.

A video of the destruction was put on social media and it generated a lot of comments, particularly from history buffs.

Left to decay, the old houses became a haven for drug addicts and vagrants, prompting the call to preserve the buildings using adaptive reuse.

Part of the cluster of old houses was transformed into the chic Old Malaya dining enclave under the same adaptive reuse initiative.

Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) past president Saifuddin Ahmad said it was a pity that Serani Row could not be salvaged, but added that it was private property.

“Nothing much can be done about privately-owned heritage buildings unless the government steps in,” he said.

Supply exceeds demand

The Government decided to freeze development of new highrise luxury residential projects of units costing over RM1mil in November last year because of a property glut and rising bank interest rates.

The measure was implemented to reduce the glut in Kuala Lumpur, following Bank Negara’s findings on the mismatch of demand and supply for housing in the country.

The freeze was first announced by Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani last October.

However, several ministers later claimed the freeze was not absolute and would be reviewed on a case by case basis.

In December, Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said a blanket ban to freeze four types of high-end developments in the country would not be implemented in the city yet, adding that the ban would not be feasible, especially in the Golden Triangle area.

When asked about the housing glut in the city, Nik Mastura said the population base of Kuala Lumpur was set to increase from 1.4 million to 2.2 million by 2020.

“Within the context of an already well-developed city, we need new strategies to optimise limited land resources,’’ she said.

“While we have exceeded the commercial floor space that was projected in the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020, which was at 41,275,600 in 2004, in the draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan, we targeted a new figure for floor space, which is 65,800,206,” she said.

“On the surface, it would seem that we are approving a lot of projects, but on the ground, many projects that received the development order have yet to start work.

“In fact, the construction progress on the ground is only between 5% and 8%,” she said.

Nik Mastura elaborated that many projects in the city were either abandoned half-way when the developer ran out of funds, and in some cases, after getting the development order, they want to wait for the economy to get better before starting on the project.

“Some even apply for the development order when they do not even have the funds to pay the development charges,” she said.

[attachmentid=9678581]
