Windows 11 Version 26H1 - UNTOUCHED

Microsoft has just released the first Windows 11 version 26H1 preview build to Insiders in the Canary Channel, however the company says this isn't going to be released as the next feature update for Windows 11. Instead, version 26H1 exists as a means for Microsoft to bring up support for upcoming next-gen silicon.

"26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers," Microsoft says in the blog post announcing version 26H1.

What this really means remains unclear, but it sounds like version 26H1 might only ship on upcoming next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 and NVIDIA N1X powered devices next year. Additionally, Microsoft says that primary feature development will continue to take place on top of version 25H2, and new features will be realeased first for Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels, at least for now.

- Windows 11, version 26H1 will only be available on new devices with select new silicon as they come to market in early 2026.

- Windows 11, version 26H1 does not support hotpatch updates.
- Windows 11, version 26H1 security updates will be manageable through typical tooling – Windows Autopatch, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Configuration Manager, etc.

This approach allows Windows to support the development of new hardware capabilities while protecting the stability and predictability that commercial customers rely on in production environments.

If you do not want it, you can turn everything off with a single toggle. Sadly, that is not possible with Microsoft. This past week, Microsoft released the December 2025 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 (KB5072033, KB5071417) and Windows 10 (KB5071546, KB5071544, KB5071543). The new Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 updates are also being pushed via the Media Creation Tool. The company also announced that it was beginning to roll out Windows 11 25H2 to all supported user PCs including on Windows 10. Microsoft explained how this could be done by switching a toggle. Microsoft released corresponding new dynamic updates too alongside the Patch Tuesday updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates.

These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. These packages include fixes to Setup.exe binaries, SafeOS updates for Windows Recovery Environment, and more. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. Both setup and recovery updates were released this time. Microsoft writes:

Microsoft earlier today announced that it is bringing a major performance boost to Server 2025 systems with a new native feature that will immensely boost storage and related speeds by up to 80%. Microsoft today also confirmed that it is now going to be enabling a Windows system service by default, and quite ironically, the service is known to cause performance-related issues on user PCs from time to time as it can eat up CPU cycles and memory blocks. Microsoft released Patch Tuesday updates for the month of December 2025 last week under KB5072033 for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2, and Server 2025 and today Neowin noticed that the tech giant updated the release notes for the C.U. (cumulative update) to include this system process change. It writes:

"December 15, 2025 Update: This feature is included in the December 2025 non-security update (KB5072033). [System Components] The AppX Deployment Service (Appxsvc) has moved to Automatic startup type to improve reliability in some isolated scenarios."

A quick Google search for the Appxsvc service leads to various forum posts and results online where users are seen complaining about this system process. This ranges from issues related to high CPU usage, memory usage, or disk impacts. Hence, the process could be a major potential resource and performance hog depending on how it could affect a user's PC. By default the Startup type for the service was previously set to "Manual(Triggered)" so that it could be launched on demand when a Store app needed to be accessed; but now Microsoft is making it "Automatic", which means low-spec and less powerful PCs running the newer versions of Windows 11 could be in for a bad surprise as the process will continue running in the background as soon as the system boots up.

For those wondering what the Appxsvc service is, the process essentially handles Microsoft Store apps and updates and if it is force-disabled, Microsoft warns that this could fail to function properly. If we were to guess why Microsoft is making the change, the company recently revealed that it is soon going to be pushing Microsoft Store updates via the Windows Update channel, and hence all Store-related changes may always be kept on by default.

Google Exposes Windows 11 Security Flaw After Microsoft Fails To Patch It Properly

Project Zero is Google's well-reputed security team that is tasked with finding security flaws in the company's own products as well as those developed by others. Discovered security bugs are privately reported to vendors after which they are allotted 90 days to patch them. If this deadline is exceeded, the security issue is made public, which serves as a way to apply more pressure on the vendor and also give customers a chance to secure themselves independently. In some complex cases, a grace extension period is also awarded. In the past, Google Project Zero has reported bugs in CentOS, libxslt, ChromeOS, and Windows. Now, the team has disclosed a security flaw in Insider versions of Windows 11.

In a highly technical report on the Project Zero issue tracker, it can be seen that security researcher James Forshaw discovered an elevation of privilege (EoP) bug in Windows 11's Insider Preview releases. This issue was present in the Administrator Protection feature that is an upcoming Windows 11 capability that enables just-in-time elevation privileges only when needed through Windows Hello and an isolated admin token. However, during their investigation, Forshaw discovered that Administrator Protection has a flaw that allows a process with low privileges to hijack a UI access process which can further be used to gain administrator privileges. The researcher reported this vulnerability privately to Microsoft on August 8, which meant that the company had until November 6 to fix it. After receiving an extension for this deadline, the Redmond tech giant was able to deliver a patch on November 12, also thanking Forshaw for his contribution in CVE-2025-60718.

Although the matter was considered closed, Forshaw recently reopened the issue, stating that the patch is incomplete and it does not mitigate the flaw fully. As a result, the security bug has been made public, following radio silence from Microsoft. While the flaw is now public knowledge, it is worth noting that it's not something you should be sitting in constant fear of. It is a local privilege escalation attack, which means that an attacker needs to have physical access to the PC in order to run arbitrary code and exploit it. Furthermore, Administrator Protection is only available on select Windows 11 Insider builds and needs to enabled manually anyway for it to take effect. As such, the pool of potentially affected customers is quite small at this point. That said, it is important that Microsoft further investigates Forshaw's findings and patches them ahead of the eventual general availability of Administrator Protection in Windows 11.

Windows 11 Is Getting A Redesigned Run Dialog,

Windows 11's Run dialog is quite an old piece of user interface. Its current form is over two decades old, and the only noticeable upgrade we have received is dark mode support in recent Windows 11 updates (which also introduced more flashbangs in File Explorer). However, it appears that Microsoft is going to give its operating system a revamped Run dialog. @phantomofearth published an early look at the upcoming Run redesign. While the new experience is not quite ready for its prime time, the shared screenshot shows a clear view of what Microsoft aims to deliver in future updates:

The new Run dialog has a larger box for your commands, and all your recently entered commands will appear above it. Also, as Windows Central reports, the dialog will automatically show the app's icon upon finding the executable you want to run. The "Browse" button that opens a File Explorer and lets you find executables is no longer there, though.

Interestingly, it appears that Microsoft will have the new Run dialog available side-by-side with the old one. The company is reportedly planning to give users a toggle that switches between the two variants, which is somewhat similar to having two context menu styles. By default, Windows 11 will use the old one, but the "Advanced" section in the Settings app will let you turn on the new variant:

Microsoft recently acknowledged both Windows 11 24H2 as well as 25H2 have major Shell issues as key UI components like the Start menu, Explorer, Taskbar, among others break. Home users should be alright though, as it mainly affects certain enterprise systems. However, it does not mean that personal computers are not affected. The latest KB5070311 update has confirmed dark mode artifacts but they can be fixed using a File Explorer tweak which also makes the app faster. Despite this, Microsoft has confirmed that it is now allowing all supported systems download and install Windows 11 25H2. Whether you are on Windows 11 or Windows 10, users can opt to upgrade to the 2025 feature update provided they have a system that meets the system requirements of Windows 11.

The tech giant had earlier also said that Windows 11 23H2 users, the version which recently ran out of support, will be receiving 25H2 as well. If you are wondering, the general system requirements have remained the same though certain AI features do require a more capable PC now. If you want to check for CPU compatibility, Microsoft recommends using the PC Health Check app.

To get it, users on supported systems will need to have the "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" toggle enabled on their Windows Update settings page for the new 2025 feature update to appear. Microsoft writes: "If you have an eligible Windows 10 or Windows 11 device, you can check if the update is available by selecting Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates. If your device is ready for the update, you’ll see the option to Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2." The company notes that managed enterprise PCs however have a separate set of requirements like the one recently introduced, related to more secure authentication.

Moving From Windows 11, Version 24H2 To Version 25H2

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. Here's what this means for your update experience.
New features we develop for Windows 11, version 25H2 are part of the version 24H2 branch. When the new code is complete, we include it in the monthly LCUs for Windows 11, version 24H2 in a Disabled state. Think of it as having the new feature code slowly staged on devices running version 24H2—yet another reason to stay up to date with monthly Windows updates!. The code remains disabled on the device until it receives the eKB. The eKB changes flags in the staged code from Disabled to Enabled. When you restart the device, the new features become enabled, and you're officially on Windows 11, version 25H2!

To confirm that the update took place, check your version and OS build number in Windows Settings > System > About.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't test, but you can focus your tests on the new features rather than a full complement of OS, application, or device compatibilities.

Moving From Earlier Versions To Windows 11, Version 25H2

Since versions earlier than Windows 11, version 24H2 do not share the same servicing branch as Windows, version 25H2, the simple update via an eKB isn't possible. The normal feature update process is the best option. Use Windows Update or Windows Autopatch. For Windows 10 devices or for new Windows 11 devices that you're deploying, first upgrade them to Windows 11, version 24H2 to make the transition to version 25H2 as simple and quick as possible when it's available.

Windows 12 launching in Q4-2025 ?, Windows on Arm will get big updates

There is no direct evidence about Windows 12 release. However, based on some indirect evidence like Microsoft still not officially announced 25H2 version of Windows 11 and rumored about NV/AMD/Mediatek are going to release their ARM SoC supporting Windows on Arm make me think Microsoft is going to announce major release of Windows 12 to focus on features on ARM plattform.

The specs are not final, but from I see, the performance going to surpass x86 platform.

How to make batch script file so i can run from powershell with normal user?

how do i remove this "other user" during login.
shown in the picture under family settings there is only admin and no additional user but when i start up my pc, the other user keeps popping up

Restore Dolby Digital (AC-3) Support In Windows 11 24H2

With the release of Windows 11 24H2 last year, and the super slow roll out of it to devices, one thing you may have missed, and also somewhat slipped under the radar, is that Microsoft have removed the AC-3 (Dolby Digital) codec, explaining in the support document that "many device manufacturers will pre-install an AC-3 codec". However, if you upgrade from an earlier edition on Windows 11 to 24H2, that codec will remain on the system.

For those that opted to clean install Windows 24H2, or bought a new computer with it preinstalled without the codec, luckily there is a third party fix to restore AC-3 support. Apps like Plex might have an issue where AC-3 is required and no sound will be heard. This can be restored with the AnWave 2024 Split Feature Release, found on GitHub.

- Download the Microsoft.Dolby.Digital.Atmos.Pack from GitHub (Download Below!)
- Extract the downloaded zip file and open the .exe
- A popup notice states that it is part of AnWave and if you would like to visit the site, you can dismiss this by clicking "No", since you just came from there
- Here you can click on "Install" for the Microsoft Dolby Digital Plus Encoder and Decoder, these are the ones we want.
- After installing both, restart your device
- Enjoy AC-3 content working again!

Note - It's important to note that in the case of Plex (and possibly others) the audio settings should also match your speaker setup. If your audio equipment is stereo, like for example, speakers built into your monitor or desktop stereo speakers then you should also make sure Plex knows this, otherwise some content will be quieter because Plex will attempt to direct play all audio channels through your stereo setup, some channels are quieter than others, which results in an overall lower volume in some cases.
