Two Singaporeans among 3 hikers reported dead after Mount Dukono eruption in Indonesia

JAKARTA – Three hikers, including two Singaporeans, have died following the eruption of the Mount Dukono volcano on Halmahera island in North Maluku, Indonesia, local police have said.

“The latest information is that there are three fatalities. Two of them are foreign citizens from Singapore. The other one is a Ternate resident,” North Halmahera Police Chief Erlichson Pasaribu told TV outlet KompasTV on May 8, referring to a city in North Maluku.

Mr Pasaribu said 20 hikers were on the mountain when it erupted, including nine foreigners. Besides the two Singaporeans who died, seven foreigners had safely come down from the mountain as at 2pm local time.

He added that the bodies of the three victims had yet to be retrieved from the mountain, as eruptions were still ongoing.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in an afternoon update on May 8 that two men and five women aged between 29 and 37 were among the seven Singaporean survivors

The national agency added that rescuers were still searching for two Singaporean men aged 27 and 30, without overtly offering any other information.

The head of local rescue agency Iwan Ramdani told Reuters that nine of the hikers are Singaporean and the rest are Indonesians. He added that the agency has deployed dozens of personnel, including police, to search for the 20 hikers trapped by the eruption.

KUALA LUMPUR: Several roads around Jalan Bukit Bintang will be closed and diverted in stages tonight for the Quranic Madani programme, "Night Reset: Bersatu Dalam Saf @ Bukit Bintang."

The event, from 8.30pm to 11pm in front of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, is expected to draw large crowds from around the capital and nearby areas.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the closures and diversions would be carried out in stages to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety.

"The affected route is Jalan Bukit Bintang and the closures will remain in place until 5am on May 9," he said.

He said the roads would be reopened in stages after the programme ends, depending on traffic conditions and the situation at the location.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the affected routes and to plan their journey using alternative roads.

"Road users are also encouraged to use public transportation such as the LRT, MRT, Monorail or e-hailing services to help reduce congestion in the city centre.

"Please follow instructions from traffic police personnel on duty at the location and practise courteous and patient driving throughout the road closure period," he said.

In a recent hackathon hosted by the Claude Builders club and sponsored by Anthropic, students were put to the ultimate test: they had just three hours to conceptualize and develop a functional health app for people on the go using AI. The surprise prompt asked participants to design a tool that removes the guesswork from staying healthy in everyday life.

With the clock ticking, teams immediately broke out to develop mobile and web dashboards, taking on the roles of product developers heavily leveraging artificial intelligence. The event served as a real-time experiment answering a growing question in the tech world: Will AI replace developers, or simply increase their productivity?

According to the associate dean of Georgia Tech's College of Computing, the human element remains vital. "If this is going to be a tool that a human is going to use, you'd want the testing to be done by humans," he noted, adding that human developers will continue to be heavily "in the loop" to refine the code that AI produces.

Students echoed this sentiment. As AI takes on more of the heavy lifting in coding, participants noted that their role is shifting to focus more on generating creative, useful ideas rather than just writing raw syntax. However, the short time span still proved challenging. As the three-hour mark approached, teams scrambled to merge their code, proving that AI still requires significant human oversight to iron out technical hurdles.

When time was up, the students presented their fast-tracked products to a panel of judges. The winning team designed an all-encompassing meal-tracking app that turns healthy eating into a game, encouraging users to maintain streaks and offering tailored nutritional advice, such as ensuring carbs are paired with enough fruits in each meal.

Ultimately, the hackathon showcased a real-life lab where the next generation of developers is learning to harness the power of AI to secure their future careers, ensuring they are hired—not replaced—by the evolving technology.

South Korea’s first robot monk officially debuted Wednesday ahead of Buddha's Birthday.

At around 10 a.m. in the courtyard of Daeungjeon Hall at Jogyesa Temple, the 130-centimeter-tall humanoid robot, dressed in traditional Buddhist robes and a kasaya, joined monks in prayer with its palms pressed together.

The robot, G1, developed by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese civilian robotics company, received the Dharma name “Gabi” during an initiation rite organized by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism to celebrate Buddha's Birthday on May 24.

The ceremony, known as “sugye,” is a Buddhist ritual during which participants pledge devotion to the Buddha, his teachings and the monastic community. Wednesday’s event was the first of its kind here involving a humanoid robot.

Gabi also participated in “yeonbi,” a ritual purification practice in which novice monks traditionally receive small incense burns on their arms. Instead, the robot received a lotus lantern festival sticker on its arm and a 108 bead prayer necklace around its neck.

The Buddhist Five Precepts were also reimagined for the robot monk. The five rules included protecting life, refraining from damaging other robots or property, respecting and obeying humans, avoiding deceptive conduct, and conserving energy by not overcharging.

JOHOR BAHRU, May 8 — A new digital immigration system aimed at easing one of the world’s busiest land borders will be introduced at the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today.

He said the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) will be deployed at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex at Bukit Chagar when it begins operations on January 1, 2027.

The White House called Star Wars ⁠star Mark Hamill “one ⁠sick individual” on Thursday after ⁠an AI-generated image of US President Donald Trump in a shallow grave was posted on one of the actor’s social media accounts.

“If Only” was inscribed on the image of ‌Trump lying with his eyes closed next to a gravestone, surrounded by daisies, with the inscription “Donald J Trump 1946-2024”. The image was posted on Hamill’s verified Bluesky account.

Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the classic Star Wars films that debuted in 1977, wrote that Trump “should ⁠live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held ‌accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes”.
