Question on ISI journal publication & viva-voce,

Hi guys, I am considering a phd programe but have some confusion on the graduation criteria below:

(1) Publication in ISI journals

How does ISI publication works? Do we need to present it in conference or to any panel before our paper is accepted? What happen if our submission is rejected, do we need to rework the whole research?

Would be great if anyone can share their valuable experience on paper publication. 😀

(2) viva-voce

Is this basically a discussion/presentation with the university examination panel on my thesis? What is the purpose of viva-voce since my papers have already been accepted and published in the journals?

Really appreciate any clarification for these two components above. Thanks!

Hello all.

I'm a late bloomer, having completed my Master's in my late 40s. Admittedly, by this time I have already made Director in my career so the entire endeavor was purely for the pursuit of self-satisfaction (my dad & wife have PhDs, mom & younger brother both have Master's degrees). In my line of work, a graduate degree means jack shit... especially at my level. It isn't going to make me Executive Director, not by a long shot.

I found the entire experience to be fun, despite the hard work, because after over 2 decades in advertising, USM's Integrated Marketing Communication actually made sense and I had my professional experience to add to the lectures. Basically grad school was easier and more enjoyable than my undergrad, coz in the 90s I was just a gormless git fresh out of high school with zero understanding of anything.

The most rewarding part was the thesis as it was inspired by an experimental olfactory communication exercise that we did for a client overseas some years ago. My supervisor told me after Raya Haji I should consider working towards getting it published, but to cut a long story short there's a possibility of continuing the work at the doctorate level. I found the work exciting and revealing as it added to my work-related experience on the same topic.

Quitting my job at my age to pursue postgraduate studies that will do me no favors in my career is a no-no (mortgage to pay, retirement plans & my kids themselves will enter uni in 2 years' time). So it has to be part-time. I understand it will stretch for 6 years and there's a saying that a part-time PhD is a slippery slope to no PhD at all coz the attrition rate among part-timers is very high.

Nobody I know has ever attempted a PhD part-time.

Has anyone here attempted such a thing? Is doing PhD part-time for self-satisfaction nothing more than a pie-in-the-sky bullshit that should be buried in the deepest orifice of my mind?

where and which organisations should we look for? how to identify them?

I'm guessing when it comes to higher learning institutions, it is easier cause they are after all in the education field and most if not all have their own research department.

but what about organisations?
as in trying to get in touch with professionals who are not in higher learning institutions

Hi,

I'm currently looking for a part time PhD position in deep learning / machine learning / IT area.
I just got my Master degree in Computer Science, and would love to do research by continuing PhD (IT, computer science or relevant).
My supervisor has a ready project for me, however that particular area is not in my field of interest.

Hence, I tried to search for part time PhD position on google and couldn't find any, they are all full-time positions. At the same time, I'm also starting to prepare my research proposal so that I can still register PhD programme in the university if I could not find any part time PhD position at the end.

Does anyone have any suggestion on where I can look for this opportunity?

WTA Obtaining Patient Chest X Ray from Hospital, For FYP: Image Detection for COVID-19

Hi there, would like to ask does anyone know how to obtain a large quantity of Chest X Rays that are labelled, in terms of Healthy/Normal, Pneumonia/Respiratory Infections and Covid19?

I am doing my FYP on Covid19 image detection from Machine Learning. Currently on Github there is CovidNet by LindaWang on her approach in detecting Covid19, that was quite successful in detecting Covid patients.

But I wont be applying her technique as it is too complexed and I would be most likely going to deploy my own model using TensorFlow. As I'm quite new to this topic.

Also, I realized that the number if Normal Healthy and Covid 19 Chest X ray images are quite limited within her dataset, also there are a lot of low resolution images within the dataset which I myself have a hard time differentiating the images. I'm not sure even the machine is able to detect such fuzzy images.

So I was wondering was it possible to obtain them from our Government and Private Hospitals through their radiology department?
But I'm not really sure how to contact them. Any advice would be nice.

I would need about a few hundred or thousands of images from either posterior anterior(PA) or anteriorposterior(AP) view.

MRI/CT images are also acceptable.

Dissertation Survey Participant Exchange, Not enough participants??

Hi fellow students and professors!

My post is oriented towards people in Masters and PhD especially in the fields where they have a lot of surveys and participant recruitment with stringent ethics committee regulations.

I study psychology at the masters level here in Malaysia (international student), and I've noticed that recruiting participants for an international is one of the hardest things EVER!

I'm gonna say it's safe to assume that it's difficult for Malaysians as well, cuz it's really not that easy anywhere.

I stumbled upon a group made by a British guy that let's students fill out each other's surveys and I honestly think this can be a great idea here as well! I'm now concerned with my thesis but I honestly think this can be something useful to have and shared among Malaysian post graduate students! (Malaysian students overseas studying things back at home would immensely appreciate it in my opinion)
