BASF sues Apple in US, says iPhones infringe face authentication patents

Sept 3 (Reuters) - BASF (BASFn.DE), opens new tab sued Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab on Thursday, accusing the iPhone maker of infringing the German chemical company's patented face authentication technology in ‌many iPhone and iPad models.
In its complaint, BASF's trinamiX unit said it spent the last decade developing technology to address a security gap that makes conventional face recognition systems vulnerable to spoofing, where fraudsters defeat face unlock features by using photographs, 3D-printed masks and ⁠silicone replicas.

The complaint said Apple did not employ BASF's patented technology when it launched face authentication, known as Face ID, in 2017 with the iPhone X, but now uses it in a variety of iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPad Pro and other products.

"Apple knew or should have known of the high probability that updating its iPhones and iPads to incorporate Face ID using material and skin detection" infringed seven ‌trinamiX ⁠patents, causing "substantial damages and irreparable injury," the complaint said.
BASF's lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas seeks unspecified damages and a halt to further infringements.
Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Cupertino, California-based company sold $196.5 ⁠billion of iPhones and $21.7 billion of iPads in the nine months ending June 27.
According to the complaint, trinamiX's origins date from 2010, when BASF scientists working ⁠on organic solar cells made unexpected discoveries that led to the building of early three-dimensional camera prototypes.

BASF created trinamiX in 2014 as a ⁠stand-alone entity to develop advanced 3D and material sensing technologies, and trinamiX holds more than 800 granted or pending patents worldwide, the complaint said.

Updating Your iPhone Using Apple Devices App,

This is the third time I’ve encountered the same issue. Yesterday, I tried to update my iPhone to iOS 26.6.1 using my laptop. I was on iOS 26.6 and thought I’d install the security update that had just been released.

I connected my phone, clicked Update, and entered my password on the phone when prompted. It downloaded the software, took a backup of my phone, and then said the update was being installed. Then my phone shut down for the updating process to complete.

The Apple Devices app on Windows just kept running the progress bar. Then, all of a sudden, it showed an error saying that the update could not be installed and the process could not be completed. The error was:

“The iPhone ‘iPhone’ could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1). 1300.0000”

I tried the solutions provided on Apple’s recovery page, including restarting the phone and pressing the volume up, volume down, and power buttons, but none of them worked. I even changed to another cable and attempted the update through DFU mode. I have both of Apple’s original USB-C to USB-C cables, so I know the cables weren’t the issue. Yet, the update still failed.

As a last resort, I always end up installing 3uTools and flashing the iOS firmware onto my phone. Thankfully, after doing that, the phone is able to boot up normally with all my apps and data intact.

I honestly don’t know what went wrong, but I just wanted to give you guys a heads-up. Try to avoid updating your iPhone using the Apple Devices app on Windows. Never encounter this problem when using iTunes to update my phone.

I’ve searched online and found that some other people have experienced the same issue. There are no problems with the backup process, syncing, or file transfers. The problem seems to happen specifically when trying to update the software through the Apple Devices app on Windows.

Using a 2020 iPhone SE and every time when I use it outdoors (outdoors-outdoors, no shade), the display will dim to a level that is borderline unusable. Not playing games, just using Safari or at most using the DJI Mimo app (not sure how intensive this is).

I wonder, are newer iPhone models more tolerant to the Malaysian sun? Since they've switched to OLED and panels with higher peak brightness?

Does the auto dimming when hot have anything to do with battery health? - my iPhone battery health is 76% currently

Sharing your daily charging good habits or bad habits.
From what I know that plug in when sleeping , unplug after next day should be good idea.
This one I always tried from iPhone 13 Pro Max and 15 pro max, the battery health dropping every 2 weeks.
For my past experience, after 20 cycles of charge might be drop from 100% to 98%.

What is the proper way to keep your lovely iPhone in good battery life.
1. Do not charging overnight.
2. Do not buy fast charge Powerbank like 25W Qi2.2 always stick on phone and charge it all time.
3. Do not wait until drain at 10% or zero then charge it.

Recommended charging way.
1. Set to 80/90% charge limits
2. Do not charge below 30%
3. Can do regularly charge from 40 or 50% to 80/90%

I guess so far this is better ways for keep your iPhone in 100% battery health, maybe you guys can input some info.

(My recent iPhone 16 plus 20 cycles still at 100% health) I would monitor it 😂

The iPhone 13 is taken care of extremely well. No dent or scratch or water or heat damage whatsoever. Just earlier today, saw a green vertical line at the far left edge of the screen.

I recall reading somewhere in the past that they do free screen replacements even when out of warranty, if their checks show there is no damage. Is this still the case?
