British teen jailed in Malaysia

The family of a County Durham teenager being held in Malaysia say he has been transferred to a high-security prison and will face 14 days in quarantine with no contact with the outside world.

Leo Nicholson, 19, from Thornley, was moved from a police station remand cell to Sungai Buloh Prison while legal proceedings continue, according to an update posted by his father on the fundraising page, that has now raised £8,750 for his legal fees.

Leo was arrested in Malaysia after he was reportedly found with a quantity of cannabis in an apartment he was sharing, an offence which can carry severe penalties in the country.

Leo’s mother, Josephine Carey, said: “Leo is my baby. No matter what, he is still my child, and I am absolutely terrified for him.

"He is only 19-years-old and is very vulnerable. He has dyspraxia, ADHD and autism, and he struggles in high-pressure situations. The thought of him facing this alone in a foreign country is something I can barely cope with.

"We believe he may have been manipulated into a situation he didn’t fully understand. I am not saying he shouldn’t face the law, but he deserves a fair chance to defend himself.

"This is not a situation where he is facing a few years - this is potentially life or death. I can barely sleep and I wake up every day feeling sick with worry about what could happen to him.

"I never imagined something like this could happen to my son. You always think it’s something that happens to someone else’s family - but it can happen to anyone’s child.”

The Foreign Office has confirmed a British male has been detained in Malaysia and said it remains in contact with local authorities, alongside the British Embassy working with the family as the case develops.

A woman who has lived with chronic pain for years because of the size of her breasts says a reduction on the NHS feels further away than ever.

Melissa Ashcroft said her size 36M breasts made parts of her life difficult, distressing and painful – leaving her sometimes unable to even lift her newborn daughter out of her cot.

The 30-year-old mother-of-two was told earlier this year that her Body Mass Index (BMI) of about 35 was above the NHS criteria threshold for reduction surgery.

However, Melissa, who lives in Blairgowrie, says the size of her breasts, which add about two-and-a-half stone (16kg), means she struggles to exercise which could help her get her weight down.

"I find it hard to exercise because I have pain in my shoulders and lower back," she told BBC Radio Scotland's Mornings programme.

"Then when I go on a treadmill, for example, I feel really embarrassed and sexualised, like people are watching me, and I don't want that when I'm just trying to exercise."

Instead Melissa has turned to swimming to keep fit as she said it can be easier on her joints but she still sometimes feels sexualised when wearing a swimsuit.

"I don't want the attention," she said. "I'm not just a walking pair of breasts, I have a personality, and I am a real human.

"It's not a joke to me, it's really serious and really upsetting just like any form of chronic pain."

Melissa first went to her doctor to ask about breast reduction surgery when she 20.

But she says she was told she would potentially struggle to breastfeed her future children if she went through with the procedure.

Melissa now has had two children - a seven-year-old son and nine-month old daughter - and her breasts have grown even more through pregnancy.

She has tried a number of things to reduce the pain, such as physiotherapy, but says she needs the breast reduction to give her a normal life.

FTSE 100 hits 10,000 mark for first time

The FTSE 100 index has climbed above 10,000 points for the first time, passing a significant stock market milestone, on the first trading day of the year.

Shares included in the index performed strongly in 2025, leaving the benchmark more than 21% higher than a year ago, when it stood at just over 8,260.

Rising share prices are good news for investors, including anyone with a pension or other savings that are invested in the stock market.

But the London index is dominated by large international companies, so is not a direct reflection of the UK economy's performance.

Share prices on the FTSE 100, which tracks the performance of the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, have surged over the past year, thanks to strong gains in some sectors including precious metal mining, defence and financial services.

Rising gold and silver prices boosted firms such as Rio Tinto, while increased global defence spending lifted contractors including Babcock and Rolls-Royce - amid economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.

The British benchmark set a new all-time intraday record as trading resumed after the new year holiday, rising more than 1% within the first hour to reach 10,046.3 points - up 114.9 from its previous level, before falling back below the threshold.

Susannah Streeter, an independent financial commentator, said the 10,000-point marker was "a psychologically important milestone" and showed London's blue-chip index was "back in favour" with investors.

"Concerns continue to swirl about the super-high valuation of US tech sector," she said, making the UK market more appealing.

Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, said crossing the 10,000-point was a New Year's gift for the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, who has been calling for more investment in the share market to boost economic growth.

"She has been banging the drum about the merits of investing over parking cash in the bank.

"The FTSE 100's achievements just go to show what's possible when buying UK shares," he said.

The FTSE 100's had outperformed US's S&P index in 2025, he added.

While some London-quoted companies were sometimes considered "old and boring" its mix of industries, including mining and banking, appealed to investors seeking stability during uncertain times, he said.

"Investors often seek solace in companies whose goods and services should be in demand no matter what's happening in the world.

"For example, we all need to pay insurance or water bills, or those in the habit are still likely to buy cigarettes or vapes, and the FTSE 100 has plenty of companies playing on these themes on offer."

Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos is "recovering well" after undergoing what he described as "a preventative medical procedure".

The former left-back, 52, updated fans on his condition via his Instagram page, which included a picture of him smiling in a hospital bed.

He also denied rumours that he had suffered a heart attack.

"I would like to clarify recent information that has been circling," he wrote.

"I recently underwent a preventative medical procedure, planned in advance with my medical team. The procedure was successful, and I am well. I did not suffer a heart attack.

"I am recovering well, and looking forward to returning to full fitness and resuming my professional and personal commitments soon.

"I sincerely thank everyone for the messages of support, care, and concern. I would like to reassure everyone that there is no cause for concern.

"My heartfelt thanks go to the entire medical team who took care of me."

Carlos won four La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues across 527 appearances for Real Madrid, and lifted the World Cup with Brazil in 2002.

Renowned as a free-kick specialist, his other clubs included Palmeiras, Inter Milan, Fenerbahce and Corinthians.
