KUCHING (May 20): Sarawak attracted RM116.8 billion in approved investments between 2021 and 2025, with major semiconductor-related projects reinforcing the state’s position in the global supply chain, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

Among the major projects are X-FAB’s RM3 billion expansion in Kuching and OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials’ RM2 billion investment in Bintulu.

He added that Western Digital has also committed to reinvesting RM1.8 billion in a state-of-the-art glass substrate plant to support the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

Collectively, these projects are expected to generate about 1,300 high-skilled jobs while further strengthening Sarawak’s role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

AirAsia has placed order for A220, finally

Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia has put its name down for as many as 150 narrowbody twinjets from the Airbus A220 family at a ceremony held in Montréal on Wednesday. The airline will also be the launch customer for the aircraft's new cabin configuration, which accommodates over 150 passengers.

AirAsia also pressured Airbus to fully commit to building the proposed A220-500 concept, which would have even greater passenger capacity. With the A220 being built in Canada owing to its origins as the Bombardier CSeries, the order also represents a key political step forward for the North American nation as it looks to grow its international export market.

According to Airbus, the new aircraft's new cabin configuration adds a total of 10 seats, boosting its capacity to 160 seats. With increased capacity, the planemaker will add additional overwing exits on each side of the aircraft. Although AirAsia is pleased with the increased seating, the carrier is putting pressure on Airbus to develop the rumored larger A220 variant, which would likely be named the A220-500.

Miri police crack down on Mat Rempit

MIRI (April 6): Ten motorcycles were seized, while 51 summonses and 51 Road Transport Department (JPJ) notices were issued during two separate operations conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri).

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operations were carried out at various locations around the city last Friday and Saturday, following public complaints on activities disrupting traffic flow and public order.

He said the first operation, known as Op Motorcycle, was conducted from 8pm on April 3 until 3am on April 4, targeting areas including Jalan Piasau, road in Miri city, Jalan By-pass, Jalan Bakam, Jalan Bekenu / Sibuti and Bekenu Bridge.

“The operation aimed to curb illegal street racing activities. A total of 33 individuals, comprising 28 men and five women, were inspected along with 31 motorcycles,” he said in a statement.

“As a result, 21 summonses were issued, alongside 51 notices issued by JPJ,” he added.

Checks revealed multiple offences, including riding without a valid driving licence, illegal structural modifications, modified exhaust systems, absence of side mirrors, missing registration plates, use of fancy registration numbers and other technical violations.

Meanwhile, a second operation, Op Samseng, conducted from 11pm on April 4 until 3.30am on April 5, focused on areas around Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina, Jalan Tanjung Lobang and Jalan Bekenu.

During the operation,35 individuals – 30 men and five women – along with 30 motorcycles were inspected.

“As a result, 10 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further action, while 30 summonses were issued,” he said.

Saudi pipeline that bypasses Strait of Hormuz hits 7 million barrel goal

NEW YORK: Saudi Arabia’s crucial East-West pipeline that circumvents the Strait of Hormuz is pumping oil at its full capacity of 7 million barrels a day, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Saudi Arabia has rolled out the contingency plan to boost exports through the pipeline to the Red Sea, as the effective closure of the strait due to the Middle East conflict has choked off Gulf oil producers’ main exit route. Flotillas of tankers have redirected to the port of Yanbu to collect the oil, providing an important lifeline for global supply.

Crude exports via Yanbu have now reached 5 million barrels a day and the kingdom is also exporting about 700,000 to 900,000 barrels a day of oil products, according to the person familiar with the Saudi oil industry. Of the 7 million barrels that goes through the pipeline, 2 million are destined for Saudi refineries.

The Yanbu route only partly offsets the hit to supply from shutting Hormuz, through which about 15 million barrels a day of crude shipments passed before the war. But the bypass is one reason oil prices haven’t reached the crisis-level highs of previous supply shocks.

With the Houthis now saying they are entering the war, the concern for the oil market will be that the Red Sea becomes a new front. Still, the Houthis have not given any indication they would attack tankers going through the Red Sea and Bab El-Mandeb strait, and at least for now there’s no sign of action in the area. -Bloomberg
