131 Mara students bound for the US to be redirecte

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 131 students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), who were initially set to pursue their studies in the United States (US), will be redirected to world top-ranked universities across four other countries.

Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the students would be placed in the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

When contacted, he said 78 students were being redirected to the UK, 28 to Canada, 22 to Australia and three to New Zealand.

He confirmed that all 131 students had received conditional offers from 16 universities, all of which are ranked among the world's top 100 in the QS World University Rankings.

KOTA KINABALU: A woman from Nabawan has lodged a police report claiming she was registered as a Muslim without her knowledge or consent.

Marni Pengeran, 38, was accompanied by her lawyer Sazalye Donol and brother-in-law Raymond Ahuar when filing the report here, supplementing a similar complaint lodged earlier in Nabawan.

She alleges she never applied to convert and only discovered her name listed as a Muslim after her husband came across a document prepared for a convert programme in their district.

Her lawyer argued the alleged conversion was invalid as no declaration or consent was given, and a mismatch in thumbprints suggests possible document forgery.

Penalty fee waiver granted by Selangor govt paves way for strata title process

AFTER years of uncertainty, 207 non-bumiputra homeowners in USJ One Park, Subang Jaya, can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Selangor government has agreed to waive a staggering RM15.32mil in penalty fees.

These homeowners, who had unwittingly bought bumiputra- designated units, were saddled with penalty fees and unable to obtain strata titles.

Clear skies ahead: Over 200 non-bumiputra homeowners in USJ One Park, Subang Jaya, are relieved that Selangor has agreed to waive RM15mil in penalty fees. — RAJA FAISAL HISHAN/The Star

However, following a persistent appeal via the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) to the state government, the hefty penalty was subsequently scrapped.

The precedent could pave the way for other owners who are caught in a similar situation in Selangor.
