Trump: No SST on US fruits

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump have signed an extensive agreement on reciprocal trade.

Under the deal, the reciprocal tariff rate for Malaysia was maintained at 19 percent.

However, Malaysia secured an agreement that a broad list of goods exempted from reciprocal tariffs under Trump's executive order in April will remain in place.

This included semiconductors and other electronic components - a major Malaysian export to the US.

Another highlight of the deal is that Malaysia would not impose any quotas on the export of critical minerals and rare earth to the US.

For the Malaysian consumer, the new deal also saw Putrajaya agreeing to exempt US agricultural and seafood products from the sales and service tax (SST).

This would mean that US-grown fruits would join apples, oranges, dates, and mandarin oranges that are exempted from SST.

The halal logo of any US-based halal-certified product designated by the Islamic Development Department will also be allowed for the Malaysian market.

Rafizi hit with gay sex video extortion threat

Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli revealed a threat he received via email telling him to pay US$100,000 or a gay sex video of him would be released.

Taking to Instagram today, Rafizi posted a video saying he received a message from Subang MP Wong Chen, who received a similar threat.

Rafizi said they had received screenshots of the videos in question.

"We shared screenshots. Looks like we're accused of sleeping with the same man," Rafizi said, visibly amused.

He said they both received the email yesterday, adding that Wong's team had since lodged a police report.

Commenting further, Rafizi attributed the creation of the video to artificial intelligence (AI).

"I think the real purpose is to hack my electronic devices, and once hacked, then even bigger slander can be made," he said.

He also revealed that his electronic devices are frequently the victim of hacking attempts.

"I have been a target as many as four times in the past nine months and received warnings from Apple," he said, sharing screenshots of the notifications.

The first was dated Nov 14, 2024 and the remaining three occurred on March 6, June 25, and Sept 3 of this year.

According to the most recent notification, the attacks were from mercenary spyware, also known as commercial spyware.

The Apple Support website describes mercenary spyware as extremely expensive and complex, as well as having a historical association with state actors.

The site says that this type of spyware is often deployed against journalists, activists, politicians and diplomats.

Rafizi opined attacks on him through false videos, fake news and hacking will continue.

"Many think it's easy to become a politician, but if we try to have our own stand or expose corruption or try to fight the rampant vested interests, in reality our daily lives will continue to be disrupted like this," he added.

He urged the public to conduct checks if they receive strange emails and odd videos or pictures of him.

House arrest bill in final stages

PETALING JAYA: A proposed bill to allow house arrest as an alternative to prison time is in its final phase, says home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the bill, aimed at reducing overcrowding in prisons, has already received approval at the policy level from the Cabinet, Bernama reported.

“The next step in the process is the preparation of an amendment matrix. The home ministry has to sit with the Attorney-General’s Chambers and once that is done, we will table it.

“The issue is the definition of ‘shackles’. One interpretation of ‘shackles’ is handcuffs, but I tend to interpret that as including various devices,” he was quoted as saying in the Dewan Rakyat today during his winding-up speech on Suhakam’s 2023 annual report and financial statements.

Once the language is clarified, Saifuddin said he would return the matter to the Cabinet to seek approval for the final amendments.

In his 2025 budget speech, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government would draft a new Act allowing house arrest as an alternative punishment for certain offences.

Under this proposed law, offenders will be required to remain in designated locations, such as their homes or care centres, for the duration of their sentences.

According to Saifuddin, prisons nationwide currently house 83,808 inmates despite an official capacity of only 76,311.

He also told the Dewan Rakyat that much of the overcrowding stems from remand cases for minor drug offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Saifuddin said electronic tagging under house arrest is one of the solutions being explored to reduce remand-related congestion, which makes up 35% of the problem

Separately, Saifuddin said there must be better checks and balances in how the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) registers refugees in Malaysia.

“They handle everything themselves – from the interview and assessment to the issuance of the card. Are there government agencies to verify and cross-check?

“The answer is no, it is entirely up to UNHCR,” he said.

Putra Heights gas blast case classified NFA

SHAH ALAM: Police have classified the gas pipeline explosion incident in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya on April 1 as No Further Action (NFA) following criminal investigations that found no elements of negligence or sabotage.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said, however, the case could be reopened if new evidence or information emerges.

"We are satisfied and are closing the case for now, but it can be reopened at any time should there be new information," he said when met after a press conference on the Selangor Narcotics Crime Investigation Department’s success at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters on Tuesday (July 1).

Hussein also welcomed anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and share it with the police.

On Monday (June 30), Hussein confirmed that there were no elements of sabotage, foul play or negligence identified that could have caused damage to the gas pipeline and triggered the explosion in the Putra Heights incident on April 1.

According to him, this conclusion was based on technical investigations conducted following the explosion of the underground gas pipeline.

He said the construction of shop lots and replacement of sewer pipes in the area complied with guidelines set by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), the Environment Department and Petronas. - Bernama

Edisi Siasat 2.0 also blocked

KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel of “Edisi Siasat 2.0”, which was created after the “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas” channels were blocked on Thursday, has now been made inaccessible to users of the platform.
A Bernama check on the channel found the following message displayed: “This channel can’t be displayed because it violated local laws (Malaysia)”.

On Thursday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) filed a civil action against two channels on the Telegram platform, namely “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas”, rendering the two channels inaccessible on the same evening.

However, at 8pm the same day, Bernama’s check of the platform found that a new account using the name “Edisi Siasat 2.0” had been created, gaining over 100,000 followers before it was blocked last night.

MCMC said in a statement that the action is the first of its kind taken against a social media platform provider, especially since Telegram holds an Application Service (Class ) licence.

It said both channels were construed as spreading content that violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which has the potential to erode trust in (public) institutions and affect public order.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Najib Razak has been granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in his RM27 million SRC International Sdn Bhd money laundering case.
Justice K Muniandy made the ruling in the High Court this morning.

Najib’s counsel Shafee Abdullah submitted last week that it was unfair for his client to wait indefinitely for a fixed trial date as the prosecution was unable to provide a timeline to gather exhibits used in the previous SRC trial.

The court was told that 807 exhibits were tendered in the earlier SRC trial.

New Selangor MB coming soon?

KLANG: With Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad stepping down from their Cabinet positions, speculation is rife in Selangor that Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari will be appointed to the Federal Government.

Some observers believe that state Islamic and cultural innovation committee chairman Dr Fahmi Ngah is a strong potential candidate for mentri besar if Amirudin's move to Putrajaya happens.

Rafizi, the former PKR deputy president, resigned on Wednesday (May 28) as economy minister after losing his party position to Nurul Izzah Anwar last weekend.

Nik Nazmi stepped down as natural resources and environmental sustainability minister on Wednesday, following his loss in the PKR vice presidential contest.

A party insider revealed that Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, the newly elected PKR youth chief, might be appointed as a senator and possibly elevated to a ministerial or deputy ministerial role.

“And whoever is already a deputy minister, including Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk R. Ramanan, has a chance of moving up as a full minister," said the source.

Ramanan obtained the second most votes after Amirudin to emerge as one of the party’s four vice presidents in the PKR central leadership polls on Friday (May 23).

Kamil, a lawyer by profession, is also a political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Merdeka Center executive director Ibrahim Suffian believes that Anwar might opt to appoint a corporate figure or technocrat rather than a politician to fill Rafizi’s role.

“However, it will be a bit of a challenge finding a candidate to take up the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability portfolio as it covers responsibilities over water, environmental and land issues.

“Since it involves handling many stakeholders, the replacement has to be someone with strong political acumen," Ibrahim added.

He concurred that Anwar may have to "shuffle the deck" and elevate an existing deputy minister to the position.

Teoh Beng Hock’s death classified as NFA

PETALING JAYA: The case involving the death of Teoh Beng Hock has been classified as requiring no further action or NFA.

According to an invitation by the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement to a press conference tomorrow, Teoh’s family was informed by police yesterday that the case had been classified as NFA.

On Nov 21 last year, the High Court had directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death of Teoh more than 15 years ago.

Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh made the order in the judicial review proceedings brought by Teoh’s family two years ago.

The family had sought a declaration that the failure of the police to complete the probe into Teoh’s death within a reasonable timeframe was a breach of common law and statutory duties.

Teoh died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

An inquest into his death was held and the coroner returned an open verdict.

However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh’s death was caused by “one or more persons unknown”, including MACC officers.

In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.

Prior to 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh’s death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

Majority of Indians back Najib’s royal pardon

KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak’s strongest backing for a royal pardon comes from the Indian community, with 62.2% of respondents supporting the former prime minister’s bid, according to a survey by think tank Merdeka Center.

Commissioned by reform group Projek Sama, the survey was conducted from March 27 to April 17 with 1,210 respondents across all 222 parliamentary constituencies.

According to the survey, public opinion on Najib’s bid for a pardon is split along ethnic and political lines.

While Najib enjoys majority support from Barisan Nasional voters and segments of the Malay and Muslim Bumiputera communities, the overall sentiment is against any move to pardon him.

“A total of 57.8% of respondents opposed his pardon plea, citing betrayal of public trust, ongoing legal cases, and his refusal to admit guilt.

“In contrast, only 32.7% supported a pardon, mostly on the grounds of Najib’s contributions to the country,” said Thomas Fann, who heads Projek Sama.

Support among Muslim Bumiputeras stood at 50.5%, while 43% of Malays backed the pardon. In contrast, 95% of Chinese respondents and 51% of non-Muslim Bumiputeras opposed the move.

Najib, 70, was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd and has been serving his sentence at Kajang prison since Aug 23, 2022.

On Feb 2 last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced that the former prime minister’s prison sentence had been halved from 12 years to six, and his fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.

Fann said that most urban respondents, or 63.6%, were opposed to pardoning Najib.

“The respondents who reject the idea of pardoning Najib range from high-income groups at 69.5% to 74.7% to private sector and self-employed workers at 63.2% to 64.5%,” he said.

The survey also gauged views on fairness in sentencing by presenting two contrasting cases: a lorry driver jailed three years for stealing bananas, and a national leader jailed 12 years and fined RM210 million for embezzlement.

Most respondents, or 54.8%, said the theft sentence was too harsh, while 44.3% found the embezzlement sentence appropriate. Another 40.8% said it was too light.

Overall, 85.1% of respondents saw no justification for reducing the sentence in the high-profile corruption case.

The survey also revealed differences in opinion regardless of political affiliation, with even BN supporters showing limited support for leniency.

“Even among BN supporters, 48.9% found the sentence fair and 32.8% thought it was too light – underlining strong public support for firm punishment in corruption cases, regardless of political affiliation,” Fann said.

Merdeka Center researcher Tan Seng Keat said the 1,210-person sample was consistent with international polling standards and reflected general public sentiment, although follow-up focus groups would be needed to explore the findings in depth.

Man who slapped non-Muslim gets DNAA

PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen who allegedly slapped a non-Muslim man for eating in public during Ramadan has been granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) by the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court today.

Magistrate A Shaarmini granted the DNAA at the request of deputy public prosecutor Nur Fatihah Nizam, who said they were ordered to refer the case to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Shaarmini granted the DNAA pending the fresh charge against Abdul Razak Ismail, 65, Kosmo reported.

Earlier, Razak was slapped with a charge of voluntarily causing hurt. He initially pleaded guilty but later disputed the case facts read out to the court.

Shaarmini then rejected his guilty plea and ordered him to enter his defence.

Before a trial date could be set, the prosecution requested the DNAA.

Razak was charged with committing the offence at a shopping mall in Johor Bahru at 3.45pm on March 16.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt, framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, is punishable with up to two years’ imprisonment, a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Second Jeju flight suffers landing gear problem

SEOUL: A Jeju Air flight from Seoul on Monday (Dec 30) was forced to return after encountering a landing gear problem, the airline said, a day after South Korea's most deadly plane crash.

The Boeing 737-800 involved in the latest incident was the same model as the Jeju Air plane that crashed on Sunday killing 179 people after coming down without its landing gear engaged.

Jeju Air Flight 7C101, which departed Seoul's Gimpo International Airport for Jeju island "at around 6.37am, returned to Gimpo at 7.25am" after a landing gear issue was detected shortly after takeoff, the South Korean airline said.

"Shortly after takeoff, a signal indicating a landing gear issue was detected on the aircraft's monitoring system," Song Kyung-hoon, head of the management support office at Jeju Air, told a news conference.

"At 6.57am, the captain communicated with ground control, and after taking additional measures, the landing gear returned to normal operation. However, the decision was made to return to the airport for a thorough inspection of the aircraft."

Local media reported that 21 passengers chose not to board an alternate flight to Jeju, citing concerns over safety and other reasons.

Jeju Air's 41 plane fleet includes 39 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Seoul said on Monday it would conduct a special inspection of all 101 Boeing 737-800 planes in operation in the country, with US investigators, possibly including from plane manufacturer Boeing, joining the probe into the crash.

"We are reviewing plans to conduct a special inspection on B737-800 aircraft," said Joo Jong-wan, head of the aviation policy bureau at the South Korean transport ministry.

Joo added that the government plans to "implement rigorous aviation safety inspections in response to the (landing gear) incidents".

In Sunday's crash at Muan, the Boeing 737-800 carrying 181 people from Thailand to South Korea made a mayday call and belly-landed before crashing into a barrier and bursting into flames.

M'sia can help Palestine restore telecommunication

ISTANBUL: Malaysia is not ruling out the possibility of working with Palestine to restore the telecommunications sector in Gaza, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is on a three-day working visit to Turkey, had a bilateral meeting with Palestinian economy minister Mohammad al-Amour today to discuss possible cooperation between Malaysia and Palestine in various areas.

He said there are many opportunities for Malaysia to work with Palestine, including on digital transformation, online payments, digital banks and e-wallets.

“I think these would help very much in getting the economy (of Palestine) back on track,” he told Mohammad after attending the closing ceremony of the 40th session of the standing committee for economic and commercial cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (Comcec) today.

Meanwhile, Mohammad, representing the Palestinian government, expressed special appreciation to the people of Malaysia who have never given up offering support and solidarity to the Palestinian people.

Fahmi also had a bilateral meeting with Statistical, Economic, and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (Sesric) director-general Zehra Zumrut Selcuk.

He said several collaboration opportunities could be explored, especially involving global training between Sesric and the Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute, as well as the MCMC Academy.

Yesterday, the minister gave a statement on behalf of the Asian Group of OIC member states at Comcec.

This is the first time in 40 years that a Malaysian minister has attended Comcec, the last being Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah in 1984.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed the apology issued by former prime minister Najib Razak over the 1MDB scandal.

“I welcome it (terima baik),” he told reporters here after Friday prayers when asked to comment on the apology issued by Najib yesterday.

Malaysian and US authorities allege that about US$4.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB, a state fund co-founded by Najib. He has been slapped with a total of 42 charges in several trials linked to 1MDB.

Najib is currently serving a reduced six-year sentence following a pardon after he was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million in funds belonging to former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.

Yesterday, Najib said he has reflected on the 1MDB fiasco over the past 26 months, and it pained him that it happened when he was the prime minister and finance minister.

“… and I would like to apologise unreservedly,” he said in a statement read out by his son, Nizar, at the lobby of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.

He also denied being the mastermind or collaborating with fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, in the scheme.

His apology comes six days before the High Court decides whether he is to enter his defence in a 1MDB corruption case that started five years ago.

Adeline Chang kena charged in court

PETALING JAYA: Adeline Chang, one of the two sisters who have gained recent online notoriety, claims she will be charged in court on Thursday (Oct 24).

Adeline has been called out on social media for allegedly repeatedly not paying for services rendered.

She is also believed to be the sister of Alice Chang, who gained similar online notoriety for controversial behaviour when she was employed at a food franchise recently.

Several Facebook pages bearing the name "Adeline Chang", claimed she would be charged in court but did not state the offence involved.

"The MCMC gave me a letter, I need to appear in court on Oct 24," read the posts on Wednesday (Oct 23).

The post then asked if she should plead guilty because of a family dispute over her bail, possible fines and legal fees.

A check on the e-kehakiman website showed that an individual named Chang Pei Yi will be charged in the Sepang Sessions Court before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman at 9am on Thursday.

On June 23, the MCMC said in a statement that they had recorded the statement from a Facebook user, whom they did not name, over an offensive post against a child.

The MCMC said this was in response to a complaint about the owner of the "Adeline Chang" Facebook account, who allegedly posted a picture of a child with an offensive caption.

A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized, said the MCMC.

Govt to come up with new law to allow house arrest

KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to introduce a law that will allow house arrest as an alternative punishment for certain offences, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said during his 2025 budget speech.

He said under the proposed law, offenders would be required to remain in designated locations such as their homes, care centres or worker dormitories for the duration of their sentence.

Prison officers will set and monitor the conditions for house arrest, which would ensure their compliance with the punishment, he said.

This measure will provide an alternative to traditional incarceration, focussing on rehabilitation while ensuring offenders remain under close supervision, Anwar told the Dewan Rakyat.

There are no legal provisions for prisoners to serve their jail sentences under house arrest.

However, Section 43 of the Prisons Act 1995 allows for a prisoner to be released on licence subject to any regulation made by the home minister.

Former prime minister Najib Razak had previously claimed that he was allowed to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest following a purported supplementary order issued by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

However, an application for leave to commence judicial review which he filed in an attempt to enforce the purported supplementary order was rejected by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in July.

Najib has appealed against the decision.
