Aorus RTX2070/eGPU Gaming Box Review

Recently, I've purchased a Aorus RTX2070 Gaming Box. It's a TB3 Gaming box that allows me to plug it in to my Lenovo X1 Extreme and acts as powerful graphics card.

It also doubles as a 'dock' allowing me to charge the laptop via USB-C + connect my keyboard + mouse. This way I can directly connect one cable to the computer and it will be my workstation

The reason why I choose AORUS is because it's small + carrying case. There are bigger size eGPU casing out there which are cheaper and allows you to put it any external graphics card

Setup
It's not easy as Plug-N-Play. My laptop has TB3 and it has a nvidia graphics card. When I first plug in , I got a BSOD. Then I realized I need to remove Lenovo drivers for nivida graphics card and re-install it back.

Even that it did not work. Of course I had to disable TB3 security in BIOS , do a couple of reboots , replug the cable and install new nvidia driver to get it to work

Performance

Here are some of the performance number. If you take a look the fps range are like GTX1060. This is because TB3 is only x4 lane and there are overheads from CPU to TB3. So you'll have to take the penalty

Here are some benchmarks from Tomb Raider

The 1050 Ti MAX-Q can't handle , getting an average of 29fps , however the RTX 2070 is getting 63fps (on internal display) and 72fps on external display. The reason why external gets it better is because the graphics card does not need to send data back to the laptop. It's one-way.

REMEMBER we are using TB3 here , it's not x16 PCIe , it's x4 and for powerful card - every bit of bandwidth is important

Conclusion
eGPU is worth it if you have TB3 laptop with Intel GPU. However for the price you are paying , it's better to get a gaming laptop. eGPU makes sense if you are a designer/video editor or someone who wants to buy a dock at home/work that allows them to plug in and have a powerful GPU

If your primary thing is gaming - go get a gaming laptop. However if you really like a light and slim ultrabook and want the power to do gaming + you plan to use the GPU for machine learning and other things , eGPU might be a choice

Hi All,

Decided to start a thread on people who are using Intel HD graphics (myself included) and have a discussion about games which are compatible with it).
Prasys' Second Hand Mac Buying Guide

Buying a second hand Mac ? No problem

I have prepared a guide that ensures that well you know the product very well before purchasing so that you don't get tricked and it is also for people who want to sell Macs

Feel free to comment and I'll expand the guide based on feedback

So let's say if you have found a mac online and you really want to buy it. First thing first is ask for the serial number of the mac. The reason why I ask this is that it allows you to check couple of things before deciding to purchase or not.

Checking if the Mac is valid & Roughly The Age of Mac

Firstly , do go to https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do and key in the serial number.
You'll notice if it has been registered , does it have extended Apple Care (and if it is out of warranty)

[attachmentid=4363542]

Next up we must validate the serial number to know where the mac was made and when it made. The reason being is that it roughly tells you when the person purchased the Mac , just in case if the guy lies or says he can't find the receipt

For that go to this link , key in the serial number

http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

Take a look of the screen shot it gives some juicy information about the Mac. In this case it was made in July 2013 - so probably the Mac must have been purchased somewhere July , August 2013. Otherwise if it is very late , Apple wouldn't allow you to register for warranty via online service

[attachmentid=4363544]

Checking the physical mac out

Once you are happy and you want to check out the mac before purchasing , ensure that you test everything - i.e multi-touch , keyboard , the cd/dvd (if any) and also look for any dents and such (i.e physical damage) to the mac. Also if you are getting a laptop , get coconut battery http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/ , it would tell you about the battery health and all which is useful - as it would give you a rough estimate how's the battery condition and all

Ensuring that Apple ID associated with the Mac is deactivated
This is super important otherwise when you call Apple support , they wouldn't able to entertain you as the mac that you bought is still registered to the old owner's Apple ID.

You need to ensure that it is completely de-registered , so please get the old owner to do the following :-

1. Login to Support Profile https://supportprofile.apple.com/
2. Find for the Mac and remove it from Support Profile (you'll have to click on the next and there is an option to delete it)
[attachmentid=4363546]

3. Then Go To me.com and login with the Apple ID and then select settings check if the Mac has been associated. You'll see something like this
[attachmentid=4363549]

4. If thats the case , go to System Preferences and choose iCloud and logout (also do ensure that locate my Mac is turned off). Also ensure that FaceTime/iMessage is logged out
5. Verify again in the Apple account , you should see that the mac is no longer associated to that account

Ensure that you have performed those steps. It is super crucial

To-Do

How to check if the mac has firmware password
How to check for drive errors

Feel free to add anything. I'll continue to add and improve the guide

ASUS RT-AC66U Review

This is a quick review of the ASUS RT-66AU , my blog has a full lengthy review. This is just to highlight the key points

Disclaimer

The router is a review unit given as a loan by ASUS Malaysia Sdn Bhd for reviewing purposes. This is not a sponsored post. The review can be negative or positive and this is part of ASUS's BoostMyNetwork program

Details of the program :- https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3030423

What's Inside the Box
Router , manual , antenna

[attachmentid=3814088]

Specification of the Router
2 USB Port , 4 Gigabit LAN ports , 1 Gigabit WAN Port , Broadcom SOC CPU @ 600Mhz , 256MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM

[attachmentid=3814090]

Key Features of the Router

Not going to bore you with the standard functionality. These are the key-ones I want to highlight

VPN Server - Allows you to use your Smartphone to hook up to your home network while away which is neat - sadly it uses PPTP and not OpenVPN

Download Manager - Allows you to torrent/download stuff to the router provided if you have connected a USB Hard Disk (Basically doubles as a NAS)

IPV6 Ready - Works with TM's UniFi/Streamyx IPV6 . It works with Tunnel Providers such as he.net

AiCloud - Your very own private cloud server , something like Dropbox !

QoS- easy to use QoS. Pretty straight forward and works well

Comparison with Stock TM Router (size)

ASUS Web Interface

[attachmentid=3814105]

Simple to use Web Interface , I find it hard at times to locate things. For instance , Port Forwarding is located under WAN , wheres to configure IPTV it is located in the LAN tab. Apart from that the UI is sleek - and the quick and easy setup app The other downside is that it only allows 1 connection at a time (meaning you can't have it logged from 2 computers)

Performance
Just have a look at the performance. I've managed to get around 230Mbps which is roughly twice the speed of 100Mbps Ethernet aka Fast Ethernet. The distance was about 9 feet without direct line of sight. Apart from that performance on 802.11n (on 5Ghz) seems to be very good as well.

The test was conducted by using LAN Speed Lite - that is by finding out how long it takes to download/upload 1.5GB file to my file server . Click on the graph to get a detailed picture

[attachmentid=3814111]

[attachmentid=3814112]

[attachmentid=3814110]

Customization
You could install 3rd party firmware such as OpenWRT/DD-WRT. The router is capable. However I did not test this out as it's a review unit - wouldn't want to brick it

Final Thoughts
ASUS RT-AC66U is a great router for people who do not own a NAS and want a router which doubles as a small computer that is capable of being a torrent/file/print server. This router is no doubt aimed for power users , I find that the price is too steep , as I am guessing it is more towards 802.11ac technology which is new. Hopefully in the future the price drops, thus making it affordable for all to get the router

Pros
IPV6 Out-Of-The-Box
NAS - You can have your own Print/File/Torrent server
DUAL WAN - basically it can act as a load balancer too
Easy to use QoS System out of the box

Cons
Poorly Written GUI
Lacks of USB3.0
Lacks of SSH and other heaps of stuff like ipkg - this router is targetted for power users but it's sad that ASUS didn't bundle them Out-Of-The-Box

Price
The suggested retail price is RM 719

Full Review
If you want to read the in-depth review , kindly check it out here

If you got anything to ask which I did not cover , feel free to ask here and I'll answer honestly !

Razer Surroundsound software for FREE

Hi,

Thought of sharing with kopitiam

Razer is giving away a software that converts your normal headphones into a 7.1 Surroundsound. The software costs $29.99 , but RAZER is giving it away for free

You may download it from here

http://www.razerzone.com/surround

My review

It works great with games , on games like DOTA , you can hear the 5.1 surround - basically you can pin point where the attacks are coming from and so on. It works great on World of Warcraft and Alan Wake
As for movies , it does improve the overall audio experience , if you have a movie that is in 5.1 surround or 7.1 , pretty much you can hear the details

Works great for voice communication tool. In fact it's great for gamers

As for Audio , it sucks it does not improve much . In fact it makes it worst.

Test files if you want to test surround

http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/techno...s-download.html

Grab one of the files and just listen

TL;DR Version

If you want to improve your experience when watching movies or playing games grab this free software that converts your headphones into 7.1 surround

How this this is done ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-related_transfer_function

Hey Guys,

I am thinking of forming a cross-realm group for FlexiRaid for SOO. Currently , I'm somewhat undergeared - 496 to be exact , but will gear up.

The idea came because I'm busy with RL (can't be committed to weekly raids like last time) and flexi raid seems to be appealing because we can have any number from 10 to 25 man in a group and it can be people of different servers

Let me know if anyone wants in , if so we can pick a time and date (could be once a week) and start having some fun !

It reminds me of those dumb SMSes that says that you need to forward this SMS to 10 people you know else you'll face wrath of the God or you will have a bad day. Why do people fall for these dumb hoaxes

Bear in mind that some of my friends who shared are graduated and working in MNC companies
