Universiti Sains Malaysia medical epidemiologist and biostatistician Assoc Prof Dr Kamarul Imran Musa believes that the actual number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia is higher right now – as much as four to 10 times more than the number of confirmed cases – because there are asymptomatic cases (people infected with the virus but do not have symptoms of the disease) that are not being tested.

Universiti Malaya virologist Prof Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar said it would take another two weeks to know whether Covid-19 had peaked or not.

Universiti Putra Malaysia medical epidemiologist and biostatistician Assoc Prof Dr Malina Osman said she could not be sure whether the disease had peaked in Malaysia.

In fact, she cannot rule out the possibility of a third wave of new cases.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to ICU.

I only want to discuss, what does it mean to our capabilities to handle/manage covid-19 ?

Boris Johnson will be an important person who can have the luxury of accessing whatever best cure which he wants to have.

If he wants remdesivir, he should be able have that.

If he wants Hydroxychloroquine, he should be able to have that.

His condition is deteriorating. That means we are still pretty far from being able to handle covid-19 effectively ?

Ivermectin in the race for covid-19 cure

This is just an experiment in the lab cell culture. They have not gotten any data on human yet.

Australian scientists have published research indicating that ivermectin, an approved anti-parasitic drug that is available worldwide, is highly effective against the Covid-19 virus when applied to an infected cell culture. The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than a million people worldwide and caused over 50,000 deaths. At present there is no vaccine nor treatment for the disease.

Ivermectin slashes coronavirus viral load in vitro
The collaborative study led by Monash University's Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI) with the Peter Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity showed that ivermectin reduced Covid-19 viral RNA present in the cell culture by 93% after 24 hours and by 99.8% after 48 hours - around a 5,000-fold reduction in coronavirus RNA, indicating that the ivermectin treatment was leading to the loss of "essentially all viral material".

Dr Kylie Wagstaff from the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, said ""We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it."

Dr Wagstaff cautioned that the tests were carried out in vitro and trials would need to be carried out in people to see if the drug was truly effective against Covid-19.

Effective anti-viral could be key in the fight against Covid-19

The paper says that development of an effective anti-viral for the coronavirus, if given to patients early on in their infection could limit their viral load, stop the disease progressing and prevent transmission. They believe that ivermectin could be a useful antiviral in the fight against Covid-19.

Ivermectin is also being studied as a potential treatment for a number of other viruses, including dengue fever, HIV and Zika. It is on the World Health Organisation's list of essential medicines for the treatment of parasite infections, including head lice, scabies, river blindness, threadworm and whipworm, among others.

Malaysia to test Remdesivir in sg buloh

Just announced by health DG, WHO has selected Malaysia as one of the countries to participate in the world wide clinical trial of remdesivir.

I supposed this is just a fairly small sample size trial, considering the drug is still in clinical trial, and WHO has so many countries to choose from.

First case #178, 34-year-old Malaysian, had attended a recent Kuala Lumpur mosque gathering identified as the latest transmission cluster . He died Tuesday.

He began to have symptoms on Mar 5 and was treated at Permai Hospital, Johor Bahru, on Mar 12 after being found positive to the disease.

Second death, case #358, a 60-year-old Malaysian, Pastor David Cheng, had chronic medical history and began to be symptomatic on Mar 7 before he was warded at the Sarawak General Hospital on Mar 14.

The progress is slow but there are already some preliminary convincing data that says it is effective.

What is not sure now is the side effects.

Qualifying a medicibe is a time consuming process.

China also conducted the test, using the double blindness method. The initial feedback is also that it is effective. Test is still on going but China also has its agenda to promote other medicines including the traditional Chinese medicine.
