RM80,000 compensation for Malaysian injured in Tha

The governor of Narathiwat province, Boonchuay Homyamyen, presented a cheque for 650,000 baht to Yusri Udin, one of two Malaysians injured in the blast.

PETALING JAYA: The Thai government today handed over compensation of 650,000 baht (about RM80,000) to one of two Malaysians injured in a bomb blast in Tak Bai, Narathiwat, on June 29.

Narathiwat governor Boonchuay Homyamyen said the Thai government deeply regretted the incident and assured the public that security measures would continue to be strengthened to protect residents and tourists.

“We will not sit idly by. The Thai government is committed to ensuring the safety of all parties and will continue to work on restoring tourists’ confidence in Thailand,” Bernama reported him as saying today.

Boonchuay said the payment was disbursed through a government fund for victims of security-related incidents, covering injuries and property damage.

He presented the compensation cheque to Yusri Udin, 38, during a ceremony at the Sungai Golok customs office.

Yusri and Abdullah Syarapi Abd Rahman, 45, were travelling in a Proton X50 when a bomb hidden in a roadside culvert exploded near a junction in Tak Bai at about 11.40am.

Thai authorities said the Malaysians were not the intended targets of the attack, which is believed to have been carried out by suspected insurgents.

Following the incident, a 40-year-old suspect was detained. Thai security forces launched a comprehensive investigation and conducted explosive ordnance disposal operations and forensic examinations at the scene.

PETALING JAYA: The US government has agreed to give RM1 million to Malaysia for the restoration of the national monument, or Tugu Negara.

This was revealed by the US embassy’s chargé d’affaires, David H Gamble Jr, at an event to celebrate 250 years of American independence in Kuala Lumpur, today.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division detained the couple, both in their 50s, about 9pm yesterday over the June 20 crash involving a Perodua Kembara.

PETALING JAYA: Police arrested a married couple in connection with a three-vehicle crash on the Federal Highway here that went viral after the driver allegedly fled⁠ the scene.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat said the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division detained the couple, both in their 50s, about 9pm yesterday over the June 20 incident involving a Perodua Kembara.

The case stems from a viral dashcam video showing a reckless "brake-check" incident on the Federal Highway towards Kuala Lumpur from Shah Alam about 6pm on June 20.

In the footage, the Kembara driver is seen repeatedly braking suddenly in front of another motorist before a collision occurs. The driver then allegedly fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind.

The video, circulated widely on social media, triggered public outrage and calls for police action.

"The magistrate granted a four-day remand on the first suspect from July 2 until July 5, while the second suspect was released on police bail after her statement was recorded.

"The investigation paper will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office for further instructions," he said in a statement today.

The injured motorcyclist involved in the incident was taken to Sunway Hospital for treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

Shamsudin reminded road users to obey traffic laws, warning that police would continue taking firm action against offenders.

My uncle seldom gambles, but one day he suddenly invited my father and a few others over to play mahjong. They played at our house, and whenever it was his turn, he would pick up the tiles one by one, caress them, and put them back. It took him 10 minutes or more just to discard a single piece. Everyone was losing their patience and told him to speed it up, but he just ignored them and claimed he was thinking. I was there too, and when I walked around the table, he snapped at me and told me not to stand behind him.
