Using Linux Mint for 4-5 months now

Have migrated my Daily PC to Linux Mint about 4-5 months ago. So far, the experience is good (except the initial part where i have to find a solution to sync Google drive locally without using the Online Accounts function).

But i have something which i am still very blur. In the initial part, i do a couple of terminal commands to install the stuff reuired for VSStudio and various plug-ins for my retro computer platform development.

I am still confused about where i can see all the stuff that has been installed. In Windows, i simply go to "Add or Remove Programs" and can see everything there. Here is not so easy unless i install everything from "Software Manager", but there are stuff which i need which is not available there.

After a couple of days, i have no idea what i have installed, much less a few months later. So i have a feeling if i ever need to remove these things, i won't know where to start. I understand you can check the list of installed programs using the sudo apt command, but that shows literally a gazillion stuff including dependancies.

How should i go about managing this? Any advice would be appreciated. Bear in mind i am a Linux noob, although i have used UNIX decades ago during college days. (I still know how to use vi!!!! ).

TQ

I have serious problem after migrating to their new App BIMB mobile.

1. In BIMB mobile, my saving account became RM 0. But checked with ATM, still got money. It's not a lot, just loose change there but i's cause for concern. Lucky all the FD still intact.

2. The old GO app and Internet banking all screw up, when login, show me a different photo than the one i set (it is only correct on BIMB mobile).

3. This is most ridiculous, call both their CS and HQ...."NOMBOR INI TIADA DALAM PERKHIDMATAN!"

QUOTE

Head Office General Line:
+603-2707 8000

Contact Centre:
+603-26 900 900

I really don't feel safe with this bank, once all FDs matured, bye bye.

Later i am going to their branch.

If you are using BI and the new BIMB mobile app, can you please check and revert here? Thank you.

Update 12:20pm

Just went to their branch. Apparently, they have a NEW WEBSITE which is linked to the Bimb mobile database. They have never mentioned anything about the new website and still allow people to login in old website, yet at the same time screw up their login to make them NOT available for login.

Simple matter of making an announcement properly in old website and redirecting to new website. If last time we do shit work like this, all kena fired already.

Old website: - https://www.bankislam.biz

New website: - https://web.bimb.com

Really bunch of incompetent fools.

PC won't start. Not sure PSU or mobo problem.

My PC stopped working today. Can't turn on. At first i thought it was the PSU, but after i use a PSU tester (like the one in the video below), i think it is working as i managed to get readings from the CPU 8 pin power.

Here

Start around 2:40

However, if i plug in the GPU 6+2 pin to the 8 pin socket there, the PSU Tester doesn't even on. But if i only use the 6pin on the 6P socket, it works fine.

Meanwhile, the motherboard seems to be devoid of all response, no beeps, USB ports can't power anything.

So my guess is, the motherboard is dead....what do you all think?

My 50" Sharp TV is getting wonky...thinking to get

My Sharp Android YV 50" is getting wonky. First the wifi dead, then it works again. Then the Digital TV dead, never mind hardly watch terrestial station. Now NETFLIX also wonky, can't start, always stuck streaming at 25%. Only left Youtube working.

This TV also > 5 years i think. So maybe get a new one...i really prefer 50" due to size, i have lots of stuff and now the bench is just enough to put the PS4, Switch and NAS on either side. Below bench already full with older consoles and amp. So maybe 55" is the max i will go.

Any recommendation for 55" TV? I am not fussy. Don't need ultra good quality. As long Google TV, got 4k, got HDR is fine. What about LG WEBOS TV? Those will not have Google Store, but is LG TV good?

Budget: RM 2.5k

https://alcatroz.com.my/brand-1/alcatroz-te...combo#preview-2

Found it in ALL IT Hypermarket the other day, but no stock. So i bought it online from shopee.

Reason I love this keyboard:
1) The ENTER key! I love this big keys. Back in the 80's, lots of them micros have L shape ENTER keys, this one is reverse L shape, but still Big and nice! Wish all keyboard design with this BIG ENTER key instead of the puny ENTER key we see nowadays.
2) Overall very retro 80's style keyboard like 8 bit micros. I love the colors!
3) The ESC key also BIG. Nice!

Only drawback is it's not a mechanical keyboard and the feel is not as good as i hoped. But still the other factors is more than enough for me to buy one. Can't wait for it to arrive!

How to make hole at back of casing smaller?

Basically it's like this. I want to install this PCIE x1 Wifi card to my PC...which is a very slim desktop casing the size of a PS4 Fat. Basically, it doesn't have any rear slots because it doesn't expect you to add anything....

So i've decided to install a Pcie WIFI card anyway, with the use of a PCIE x1 extension cable/riser. I have drilled one hole at the back and enlarge an existing hole to allow the antenna point of the card to be pass through. But even if the Antenna are wired to the card, the thing is too loose and there is no support anywhere as the hole is kind of big (if it's too small, it cannot go through). Although it might work, but the card will be dangling inside the case with zero support.

Is there anyway to make a tighter fit or with support? I was thinking how to fill the hole to make it smaller, tried adding stuff like double sided tape, masking tape to the card connection point to make it thicker in the middle so the hole can fit the card, but it doesn't work...

Any ideas???

The PADU Thread

I think we should have a dedicated thread for this. Tons of info needed to fill up.

All PADU related discussion please come here.

An article from the Star on what is PADU:

==============================

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 2 — The long-awaited Central Database System (Padu) will go live later today after its official launch by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This will also mean that Malaysians who are eligible for targeted subsidies are one step closer to receiving the much-needed aid, as the government will use Padu to implement the targeted subsidies.

However, Padu is much more than just a tool to disseminate targeted subsidies, as it will be the government’s central database system of 32 million Malaysians.

Padu, managed by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM), covers nearly 300 types of data under the federal government, with data from state and local governments gradually included.

Except for banking data, as Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA), does not permit the use of such data by anyone.

Is data stored with Padu safe? This was among other concerns raised, and to this, Rafizi was previously reported saying that there will be no changes in the ownership of data (currently owned by either government departments or agencies). As for retrieving of data, agencies that contribute may not necessarily be able to take these data for their usage.

The Economy Minister has also assured the public that existing laws of the respective government departments or agencies govern all data that Padu uses.

Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli has assured the public that existing laws of the respective government departments or agencies govern all data that Padu uses. — Picture by Miera Zulyana
Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli has assured the public that existing laws of the respective government departments or agencies govern all data that Padu uses. — Picture by Miera Zulyana
What’s inside Padu?

Those curious about what Padu contains include profiles of individuals and households which encompasses citizens and permanent residents in Malaysia.

It also seeks to provide a secure, comprehensive and “near real-time” main national database for digitisation and the production of periodic analytics.

Essentially, it is a data-driven policy formulation and decision-making process.

What Padu does is also improve the government’s efficiency in the aspect of delivery system service.

It will also empower the social system through increasing economic and people's well-being, bridging the socioeconomic gap by balancing the needs of the people.

Those who are 18 years old and above are required to verify that their information is up to date with Padu. — AFP pic
Those who are 18 years old and above are required to verify that their information is up to date with Padu. — AFP pic
How can the public contribute?

Those who are 18 years old and above are required to verify that their information is up to date with Padu.

They will have until March 31 to update their profile information with the government.

Because the system was built by civil servants, it did not incur additional setup costs except for hardware which amounted to RM2 million.

Rafizi reportedly said that Padu was fully developed by civil servants from three agencies (Ministry of Economy, Department of Statistics Malaysia — DOSM and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit — Mampu) in collaboration with all other agencies.

He said civil servants developed the system using existing allocations and infrastructure without the need to open new tenders to private entities, thus not incurring additional expenses, as is often the case whenever a new system is introduced to the government.

And why the system was developed within seven months (May to December this year), it was all thanks to civil servants who worked day and night for seven months without additional allocations.

==================

More info on what is PADU:

https://soyacincau.com/2024/01/02/padu-what-you-to-know/
https://padu.gov.my/

Weird monitor problem, i am stumped.

Ok it's like this i have build a new PC and it has problem with this LG monitor i have. It is connected from HDMI to to Monitor DVI using a DVI->HDMI adapter.

The problem is, it keeps losing signal every few 2 seconds, display the LG logo, then display came back on again indicating it's DVI...and lose again.

I have tried boot from Windows and Linux (via Batocera) and both has the same problem.

Now i take this new PC (together with the HDMI cable it was using) to another monitor(AOC monitor, used as 2nd monitor in my main rig) and TV and both has no problem!

So problem is with the LG monitor right? Not so simple...

I take this LG Monitor to my main rig and plug in as 2nd monitor using the DVI->HDMI , and voila, no problem!

What gives????

Summary:
1) New PC + LG monitor= lose signal every 2 second and on/off until my eye pain

2) New PC + AOC monitor=no problem

3) Main rig + LG monitor= no problem

I am still betting it's the LG monitor fault,,just don't understand why. Also tried DVI -> DVI on LG monitor with new PC, same. Tried VGA, also same.

Right now, my solution is swapped these monitor...but LG is smaller and i prefer a smaller monitor in my room.

Anyone has any idea why this happens???
Introducing the Commodore Amiga

QUOTE

Amiga is a family of personal computers introduced by Commodore in 1985. The original model is one of a number of mid-1980s computers with 16- or 32-bit processors, 256 KB or more of RAM, mouse-based GUIs, and significantly improved graphics and audio compared to previous 8-bit systems. This includes the Atari ST—released earlier the same year—as well as the Macintosh and Acorn Archimedes. Based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, the Amiga differs from its contemporaries through the inclusion of custom hardware to accelerate graphics and sound, including sprites and a blitter, and a pre-emptive multitasking operating system called AmigaOS.

The Amiga 1000 was released in July 1985, but production problems kept it from becoming widely available until early 1986. The best-selling model, the Amiga 500, was introduced in 1987 along with the more expandable Amiga 2000. The Amiga 3000 was introduced in 1990, followed by the Amiga 500 Plus, and Amiga 600 in March 1992. Finally, the Amiga 1200 and Amiga 4000 were released in late 1992. The Amiga line sold an estimated 4.85 million units.

Although early advertisements cast the computer as an all-purpose business machine, especially when outfitted with the Sidecar IBM PC compatibility add-on, the Amiga was most commercially successful as a home computer, with a wide range of games and creative software.[2][3] The Video Toaster hardware and software suite helped Amiga find a prominent role in desktop video and video production. The Amiga's audio hardware made it a popular platform for music tracker software. The processor and memory capacity enabled 3D rendering packages, including LightWave 3D, Imagine, and Traces, a predecessor to Blender.

Poor marketing and the failure of later models to repeat the technological advances of the first systems resulted in Commodore quickly losing market share to the rapidly dropping prices of IBM PC compatibles, which gained 256 color graphics in 1987,[4] as well as the fourth generation of video game consoles.

Commodore ultimately went bankrupt in April 1994 after a version of the Amiga packaged as a game console, the Amiga CD32, failed in the marketplace. Since the demise of Commodore, various groups have marketed successors to the original Amiga line, including Genesi, Eyetech, ACube Systems Srl and A-EON Technology. AmigaOS has influenced replacements, clones, and compatible systems such as MorphOS and AROS. Currently Belgian company Hyperion Entertainment maintains and develops AmigaOS 4 which is official and direct descendant of AmigaOS 3.1 - the last system made by Commodore for the original Amiga Computers.
