Man in JB Stabs Ex-Girlfriend to Death Before Taking Own Life, 2 Others Injured Trying to Stop Him

A woman in Johor Bahru was murdered last night in an argument with her ex-boyfriend, who took his life after the killing.

In the tragedy that took place on Jalan Austin Heights 8/3 in Taman Austin Height last night (20 October), the woman was found with stab and slash wounds on her body.

Both the victim and the perpetrator are Myanmar nationals, and a 24-centimeter IK 24 knife, believed to be the murder weapon was also found at the scene.

The woman’s ex-boyfriend was also found dead at the scene, and police believed that he took his own life immediately after the murder.

2 other people were injured in the incident

South Johor Bahru district Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, said that the police received a report about the matter last night at 7:47 PM. He added that two other witnesses were injured while trying to help the couple.

A foreign woman, aged 23, and a local 17-year-old man tried to stop the suspect from attacking the victim, but were injured in the process.

Both the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, and the motive of the murder is still under investigation, Raub said in his official statement this morning (21 October).

The matter is now being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and the public with relevant information are urged to reach out to the police to assist with the investigation.

No remorse’: Man confronted for sexually abusing daughter retorts it takes two hands to clap

SINGAPORE – A teenage girl who was sexually exploited by her biological father for more than three years finally mustered up the courage to tell her mother about the abuse.

When the woman confronted the man, he callously retorted that “it takes two hands to clap”, showing no remorse, prosecutors told the High Court.

The victim’s mother divorced the man following the revelations.

On Sept 12, the 40-year-old man pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual penetration of a minor under 16, and two charges of exploitative sexual penetration of a minor between 16 and 18.

Nine other charges for sex offences he committed against the victim will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced at a later date.

The prosecution sought a sentence of at least 18 to 19½ years’ jail and 16 strokes of the cane.

Justice Dedar Singh Gill asked for further submissions on whether abuse of trust could be considered an aggravating factor for the exploitative sexual penetration charges, after defence counsel Raphael Louis argued that this amounted to double counting.

The victim’s parents married in 2009, after the girl was born out of wedlock in 2003. The couple had two sons after their marriage.

The victim was raised by her grandmother, who pretended to be her mother, while her parents pretended that they were her siblings.

She eventually learnt the truth when she was in primary school, after chancing upon her birth certificate.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Phoebe Tan told the court that in mid-2017, the victim’s mother discovered text messages between the girl, who was then 13, and her former boyfriend.

The victim’s father confronted the girl, but then pivoted to asking her to demonstrate on him what she had done with her former boyfriend, and persuaded her to kiss him.

Over the next three years, up until September 2020, the man’s sexual advances escalated to touching her inappropriately and engaging in various penetrative sexual acts with her.

He would usually enter her bedroom when the family was asleep, close the door behind him, and engage in the sexual activities with her.

At one point, she wrote him a letter asking him to stop what he was doing to her.

In the letter, she asked her father if he ever cared about her feelings, and said he always lied that he would stop engaging in sexual activities with her but never did.

The acts stopped for a while after the man got the letter, but resumed afterwards.

On Aug 23, 2020, when the victim was 16, she had sex with her husband before he left for work. It was not specified in court when she got married.

After her husband left, her father entered her bedroom and had sex with her. She implored him to stop and suggested another sex act so that he would end what he was doing.

On the night of Aug 31, 2020, the man started punching and kicking the walls of the flat after he found her bedroom door locked.

DPP Tan said the man was angry that the victim was not paying more attention to him.

The next day, he tried to touch her, but she pushed his hand away.

The man later threatened to tell her husband about their sexual activities. The victim then decided to tell her mother what her father had done.

“The accused told the victim’s mother that it takes two hands to clap, implying that the victim was also to blame for their sexual relationship, after which he left the house,” said DPP Tan.

The victim also told her husband that she had been raped by her father. Her husband called the police, and her father was arrested on the same day after he surrendered himself.

When he was charged in 2021, the man faced 14 charges, including one for rape and one for aggravated rape. The prosecution offered the man a plea deal, but after initially accepting the offer, he changed his mind and said he wanted to claim trial.

After rounds of to-and-fro, the rape charges were reduced to charges for exploitative sexual penetration of a minor, while one charge of outrage of modesty was withdrawn.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kerajaan Persekutuan akan mengharamkan sepenuhnya penjualan rokok elektronik atau vape sebagai langkah membendung penyalahgunaan produk berkenaan.

Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, berkata pelaksanaannya akan dibuat secara berperingkat, bermula dengan pengharaman sistem terbuka sebelum diperluas kepada semua jenis vape sehingga meliputi keseluruhan produk.

Beliau bagaimanapun tidak memperincikan had masa ditetapkan bagi pelaksanaan pengharaman sepenuhnya penjualan rokok elektronik atau vape.

Sebagai langkah awal, katanya, Kementerian Kesihatan (KKM) sudah mengadakan perbincangan terperinci bersama kementerian dan jabatan utama.

Ini membabitkan Kementerian Kewangan, Jabatan Kastam Diraja Malaysia, Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, Kementerian Dalam Negeri melalui Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), Kementerian Pelaburan, Perdagangan dan Industri, Lembaga Pembangunan Pelaburan Malaysia serta Pejabat Penasihat Undang-undang.

"Hasil penelitian dan cadangan pelaksanaan pengharaman akan dibentangkan kepada Jemaah Menteri bagi mendapatkan persetujuan dasar, seterusnya menjadi asas kepada pelaksanaan pengharaman penuh rokok elektronik atau vape di negara ini," katanya dalam jawapan bertulis Dewan Negara, hari ini.

Beliau menjawab soalan Senator Baharuddin Ahmad mengenai kesediaan kerajaan mengharamkan penjualan vape seperti dilaksanakan beberapa kerajaan negeri supaya kesihatan rakyat awam dapat terus dilindungi daripada penyakit memudaratkan.

Sementara itu, Dzulkefly berkata, KKM menyokong langkah enam kerajaan negeri iaitu Johor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah dan Pahang yang tidak mengeluarkan atau memperbaharui lesen penjualan vape melalui bidang kuasa pihak berkuasa tempatan (PBT) masing-masing.

"Ini adalah pendekatan proaktif seiring matlamat kesihatan awam negara," katanya.

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich says he and his team-mates should not have "expressed political opinions" during the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

Captains of seven European nations planned to wear 'OneLove' armbands symbolising diversity and tolerance during the tournament, as homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

After world governing body Fifa threatened sanctions against players who wore the armbands, Germany's players placed their hands over the mouths during a team photo before their opening-game defeat by Japan.

"We wanted to convey the message that Fifa is silencing teams," then head coach Hansi Flick said after the game.

Speaking before Germany's upcoming Uefa Nations League games, Kimmich said he regretted making the gesture.

"In general us players should stand for specific values, especially as the captain of the national team. But it is not our job to express ourselves politically all the time," Kimmich told a press conference.

"Look at the issue of Qatar. We did not present an overall good picture as a team and country. We expressed political opinions and it took a bit away from the joy of the tournament. It was an outstanding World Cup in terms of organisation.

"Western countries represent views which we think are universal and should be true everywhere. We as a country are feeling that we also have problems, our own building sites. So it is maybe good to focus on that.

"In the past we did not do everything right, you want to stand for values that are non-negotiable but we have people who should deal with politics and they are the experts. I am no political expert."

Kimmich's comments came after he was asked about the 2034 World Cup, with Saudi Arabia set to be confirmed as hosts at the Fifa Congress vote next month as the only candidates.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have expressed concerns about the country's human rights record and the treatment of migrant workers on construction sites.

"I would wish that those lads who will take part in the tournament in 10 years' time can focus on the competition. After all it is our duty to do our best when nominated because we are measured on results," Kimmich said.

Saudi Arabia denies accusations of human rights abuses and says it protects its national security through its laws.

Germany will play Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary on Saturday and Tuesday respectively in Uefa Nations League Group A3.

Gerry Marsden, singer of You'll Never Walk Alone, dies aged 78

Gerry and the Pacemakers singer Gerry Marsden, whose version of You'll Never Walk Alone became a football terrace anthem for his hometown club of Liverpool, has died at the age of 78.

Friend Pete Price said on Sunday that the singer died after a short illness.

Marsden's band was one of the biggest success stories of the Merseybeat era, and in 1963 became the first to have their first three songs top the chart.

The second was Ferry Cross The Mersey, written by Marsden.

Marsden was made an MBE in 2003 for services to charity after supporting victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

At the time, he said he was "over the moon" to have received the honour, following his support for numerous charities across Merseyside and beyond.

Price said his friend died following an infection in his heart.

"Sending all the love in the world to Pauline and his family. You'll Never Walk Alone," he wrote in a post on Twitter.

Liverpool FC posted on social media that Marsden's words would "live on forever with us".

While Marsden was a songwriter as well as a singer, his most enduring hit was actually a cover of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical number from 1945, that he had to convince his bandmates to record as their third single.

In a 2013 interview, Marsden told the Liverpool FC website how You'll Never Walk Alone was adopted by the club's fans as soon as it topped the chart in 1963: "I remember being at Anfield and before every kick off they used to play the top 10 from number 10 to number one, and so You'll Never Walk Alone was played before the match. I was at the game and the fans started singing it.

"When it went out of the top 10 they took the song off the playlist and then for the next match the Kop were shouting 'Where's our song?' So they had to put it back on. Now, every time I go to the game I still get goose pimples when the song comes on and I sing my head off."

As well as being a Liverpool anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone has also been adopted by fans at both Celtic in Scotland and Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Shariff Samat was a footballer who wore his heart on his sleeve and gave everything on the pitch each time he played.

This was the common refrain among former teammates and friends who paid tribute to the ex-Singapore international, who died yesterday at the age of 36.

The Straits Times understands that his sudden death was due to a heart attack. He left behind his wife and a four-year-old daughter.

Shariff, the son of former Singapore captain Samad Allapitchay, made over 100 appearances in the S-League - now known as the Singapore Premier League (SPL) - for Sembawang Rangers, Home United, Young Lions, Tampines Rovers, Hougang United, Woodlands Wellington and Geylang International.

He earned his only cap with the Lions in a 2003 friendly against Myanmar, and won a bronze medal with the Under-23 team at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said on its SPL Twitter account that it is "deeply saddened to learn about the passing of former player Shariff Samat".

Home United midfielder Shahril Ishak, who was his teammate at the 2007 SEA Games, said: "He was really happy when we won the bronze medal, it meant so much to him and his dad.

"There was pressure on him because he's the son of a football legend and people kept talking about whether he would take his father's place. But I knew no matter what, he would give 100 per cent in the game."

Defender Baihakki Khaizan, who was Shariff's Young Lions teammate in 2006, commended him for being a great friend off the pitch and someone who was "full of sincerity and a very passionate person".

Shariff was also known for his temper, as he ran into trouble on several occasions.

While playing for Sembawang in 2003, he was banned for nine months and fined $500 by the FAS for punching and breaking the nose of Geylang defender Peter Bennett in an off-the-ball incident.

In 2011, Shariff, playing in Hougang colours, was suspended for five games and fined $1,500 for a brawl with Etoile goalkeeper Hadama Bathily.

In 2016, he was jailed for two weeks for voluntarily causing hurt to his brother-in-law.

Despite his transgressions, his passion for the game commanded the respect of those around him.

National goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, who met him when they were studying at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Ang Mo Kio in 2002, said: "We grew up together and he was like a brother to me. He was a very loving person and a good friend."

Woman stabbed to death in snatch theft

BATU PAHAT, Feb 13 — A 47-year-old woman was killed after she was stabbed by a snatch theft at Jalan Sutera 7, Taman Sutera Yong Peng, here early today.

Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Wahib Musa said the victim identified as Tan Chi Ann was initially found alive by a passerby at 1.25am and was rushed to Pantai Hospital but she succumbed to her injuries at 3am.

Abdul Wahib said initial investigations suggest that the victim was stabbed while defending herself from having her handbag snatched by two suspects on a motorcycle.

“The victim, a cook was on her way home on a motorcycle when approached by the suspects.

“She held on to her handbag and this prompted the suspects to act aggressively and one of them stabbed her and fled the scene immediately,” he said.

Tan was on her way back home in Ang Lok Yuan, near Yong Peng when the incident occurred.

Tan’s body was found about 50 meters from her motorcycle. Investigators also found a handbag harness at the location.

Abdul Wahib said the victim’s body was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital for a post-mortem.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
