Sabah, Labuan to face power rationing from Aug1–7

KOTA KINABALU (July 30): Electricity supply in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan will be rationed from August 1 to 7 due to scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) owned by Petronas.

An estimated 200,000 account holders will be affected, with power outages lasting one to two hours on a rotational basis.

Members of the public can obtain updated information on affected areas and outage schedules via SESB’s Facebook page and mobile application.

KL night markets may disappear in 10 years, says association

“We are facing many challenging issues as business is slowing down. We are competing with food delivery services.

“I have to be honest, maybe in 10 years, we won’t see any more pasar malam because the attraction is not there anymore and the gig economy might supersede our businesses,” he told The Vibes.

He said PMKL currently manages 85 night market locations around KL.

“Since last year, about 12 pasar malam have closed down. We wouldn’t be surprised if more close down in the near future."

Muszaffar also reported that in the last six months, business had dropped by up to 50% for night market operators.

“Last year we managed to get good profits of up to 30%. Now, there is a reduction where you can only get about 10% to 15% depending on the area.

“This is due to the cost of living and high prices of goods and services. Customers are also tightening their belts, forcing traders to use their capital to cover their losses.

"Previously, traders could bring home RM3,000 per month, but now it has dropped to RM1,500.

Minister calls for night entertainment complex

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung wants night entertainment complexes set up in 12 places around the country to attract high-spending tourists.

At a question-and-answer session at the National Assembly on Wednesday, he said the complexes would include pedestrian streets, night markets and luxury amusement services targeted high-spending tourists staying in the country for long.

Vietnam lacks entertainment activities for international visitors, especially night-time experiences, due to lack of incentive policies, he said.

The 2018 Vietnam Tourism Summit had heard that foreign visitors spend nine days on average in both Vietnam and Thailand, but spend US$163 a day in the latter and only $96 in the former.

Baiting tourists with a click

In most cases, if one does not give in to their demands, these photograph touts would sneak into the background to try and ruin the snapshots taken by the tourists themselves.

These photographers usually group in popular spots around the KLCC grounds, making sure no one gets away from their “dragnet”.

Some also roam around, pouncing on tourists taking selfies.

“Come and try first. We can take your picture. You can pay later,” said one of the individuals to a reporter from The Star who disguised as a tourist at the KLCC area.

The person offered to accept payment in cash or through online transfer.

A local tourist from the north, who wanted to be known as Cheng, said his family outing turned sour after being harassed by these photographers.

“We did not agree but they were adamant in wanting to take photos for us. Eventually, they left us alone but whenever we tried to take our own pictures, they would come in the background to ruin our shots,” she said.

Meanwhile, several auxiliary police officers interviewed said they first began patrolling the area about three weeks ago.

“We received many complaints from both locals and tourists on the activities of these photographers. We are keeping a close eye on them,” said an officer.

The Kuala Lumpur City Centre management said it was fully aware of the concerns.

According to Michael Grahn, chief economist for Sweden at Danske Bank, “Beyonce’s start of her world tour in Sweden seems to have coloured May inflation, how much is uncertain.”

Grahn said in a post to social media that her much-hyped concerts in May “probably” accounted for 0.2 of the 0.3 percentage points added to inflation by hotels and restaurant prices.

Tens of thousands of fans flocked to Stockholm in the middle of May to catch the two concerts that kicked off her first solo tour in seven years.

PETALING JAYA: Thanks to some sunny weather, the arrival of foreign workers and a good harvest, locally grown greens are abundant and now a bargain for shoppers with Hari Raya just around the corner.

Farmers said now is a good time to enjoy fresh and cheap vegetables. They expect the bargains to last until after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Federation of Vegetable Farmers Associations president Lim Ser Kwee said vegetable harvests had increased by some 30% at most farms following the recent sunny weather.

He said there has also been less consumption by businesses and families during Ramadan.

“Sales of vegetables have gone down by about 20%, as some shops and businesses cut operating hours in the fasting month.

“Families also consume fewer vegetables during this time, causing an oversupply of up to 50% in the market. The prices of many locally grown vegetables have gone down by up to 50%,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Lim said a kilo of cucumber that was around RM3 to RM4 last month is now less than RM1.

Air Selangor: 144 areas in Gombak, KL to face

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 ― A total of 144 areas in Gombak and Kuala Lumpur will experience unscheduled water supply disruption due to a leaking valve in Warta Lama, Jalan Kuching here.

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) in a statement today informed that the repair work on the valve will be carried out beginning 11am tomorrow (March 30) and is expected to be completed by 9pm.

“Water supply will start to be channelled in stages to consumers’ premises after the repair work is completed. The water supply is expected to be fully restored by 9am on March 31,” read the statement.

Air Selangor has advised consumers to store adequate water supply before the repair work is carried out.

“Alternative assistance through tanker lorries will also be mobilised to the affected areas, giving priority to critical premises,” it said.

The latest developments on the water supply disruption will be informed through Air Selangor’s official communication channels and website at www.airselangor.com.

SEOUL: North Korean soldiers shot dead a suspected South Korean defector at sea and burned his body as a coronavirus precaution after he was interrogated in the water over several hours, Seoul military officials said Thursday.

It is the first killing of a Southern citizen by North Korean forces for a decade, and comes with Pyongyang at high alert over the pandemic and inter-Korean relations at a standstill.

The fisheries official disappeared from a patrol vessel near the western border island of Yeonpyeong on Monday, a South Korean military official told AFP.

More than 24 hours later, North Korean forces located him in their waters and questioned him from a patrol boat, he said, with Yonhap news agency adding his interrogator wore protective equipment.

He was killed around six hours after being found, according to the official.

"He was shot dead in the water," he said. "North Korean soldiers poured oil over his body and burnt it in the water.

"We assess it was carried out under the North's anti-coronavirus measure," he added.

Pyongyang has closed its borders and declared an emergency to try to protect itself against the virus which first emerged in neighbouring China.

The man was wearing a lifejacket and his shoes had been found on board the South Korean boat, the official said – indicators pointing to him entering the water voluntarily.

"We have obtained intelligence that he had expressed his intention to defect while being questioned," he added.

He declined to go into detail about the source of the information.

But the South Korean military is known to intercept radio communications by the North's forces.

The killing took place after an "order from superior authority", Yonhap cited South Korean officials as saying.

Seoul's defence ministry condemned the shooting as an "outrageous act."

"We sternly warn North Korea that all responsibilities for this incident lie with it," it said in a statement.

'Zombie cicadas,' infected with a mind-controlling

Humans aren't the only ones susceptible to the psychedelic effects of fungi. Cicadas are feeling the effects on a deadly level. For the winged bugs, this is ''Night of the Living Dead.''A mind-controlling fungus spreading among insects has been identified by researchers in West Virginia. According to a study recently published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, the fungus called Massospora found in cicadas contains similar chemicals to those in hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Once the fungus takes over, the cicadas lose their limbs and parts of their bodies are eaten away. While harmless to humans, the ''zombie cicadas'' are a threat to each other as the males become infected and are capable of flying around and continuing to spread the fungus to other cicadas.

The fungus causes the males to flick their wings to make the familiar cicada humming sound that is typically made by females. The flicking attracts other males as they think it is a female making a mating call, thus spreading the fungus to the attracted males. The fungus is a death sentence to cicadas as it begins building up in the abdomen, eating away from the inside as fungal spores grow. The fungus results in ''a disturbing display of B-horror movie proportions,'' according to a press release from West Virginia University.

Certain cicadas spend years underground where they encounter the fungus, according to Science Daily. Once they arise, the fungus begins eating away their bodies. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the infection cannot spread to humans or other organisms as it evolved over millions of years only for cicadas, sparing humans from another horror movie-worthy situation like murder hornets.
