Locally Assembled MGS5 EV, Marks New Phase For MG Malaysia

MG Motor Malaysia has officially launched the locally assembled MGS5 EV, signalling a shift to full-scale CKD production in Malaysia following the model’s initial line-off in Melaka earlier in March.

The launch strengthens MG’s localisation strategy and expands its electric vehicle (EV) line-up, with assembly carried out at the PEPS-JV facility in Melaka in partnership with EP Manufacturing Bhd, supporting supply chain development and local automotive participation.

Built on a rear-wheel-drive EV platform, the CKD MGS5 EV delivers 151kW and 350Nm of torque, an upgrade over the imported version, offering sharper acceleration and improved drivability for urban and highway use.

Charging performance is rated at up to 150kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in around 26 minutes under optimal conditions, while WLTP range reaches up to 446km depending on variant.

The LUX Long Range variant adds ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat and a hands-free tailgate, positioning the model in the upper tier of affordable EVs in the market.

Safety is backed by seven airbags and ADAS 2.5, including Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control, with the model holding five-star ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

MG Motor Malaysia Managing Director Emory Qi said the CKD launch reflects the brand’s commitment to localisation, innovation and Malaysia’s role as a regional EV manufacturing hub.

“Production at the Melaka facility is estimated at 120 to 180 units per month, with annual output projected between 1,500 and 2,000 units in 2026,” Qi said.

Bookings for the MGS5 EV are now open, with the LUX Long Range variant priced from RM116,900, positioning it as a competitively priced locally assembled EV in Malaysia’s growing electric vehicle market.

The other day my Hyundai Elantra kept jerking, and brought my car to check. The foreman open up the ignition coil and spark plug to check 1 by 1, ended up i had to replaced 1 of the ignition coil. and i was charged RM40 for labour fee. Is this labour fee reasonable?

Hire Purchase (Fixed and Variable), Variable = Mortgage Full Flexi?

I have question in regards to the new type of hire purchase “Fixed (Simple Interest)” vs “Variable” rate.

For mortgage loan, full flexi allows me to put money in and withdraw out and the interest calculate as per the interest let say 4% per annum day rest.

Anyone knows whether Hire Purchase variable rate also comes with such flexibility?

Let say i take 200k Hire Purchase Variable Rate loan 7 years period, and i park 200k in for 2 years (pay principal no interest), and 3rd year i withdraw 100k (and pay the interest based on remaining owe)… is it possible?

Hey guys, need some recommendation, before the war crisis happen already wanted to change next car to EV car, as current stages it give me more confident change to EV car is the right choice, but the thing is i not sure which brand is better overall, as most of them are from China.

My concern is if the battery already stable for long term use? and if yes which brand is better, my budget is not more than or around RM100k, are there good vehicle to recommend under this budget?

Would like to seek some advice regarding my 2017 Honda Civic. Recently noticed a few issues and have sent the car for diagnosis. The workshop has identified some parts for repair/replacement, but I’m not too familiar with the usual market rates, so hoping to get some guidance here before proceeding.

Here are the symptoms I’m experiencing:

When pressing the accelerator, the car feels a bit jerky — not very smooth, like there’s a slight pulling/backlag feeling.
Upon starting the engine and even when stopping at traffic lights (gear in ‘N’), there’s noticeable vibration. Can feel it quite clearly, especially from the rear mirror shaking slightly.
When going over bumps, there’s an “eee” sound coming from the tyre/suspension area.

The workshop has provided the following quotation (mentioned parts are Honda original):

I've been watching some car reviews on Youtube lately. Each reviewer has their own style and way of reviewing. Some would test the vehicles by driving up Genting Highlands or on Sepang race track fast and furious style, some would drive in normal driving conditions on the highways while one would carry a measuring tape along to do some measurements.

Some reviewers would leave positive remarks only, no negative remarks or bad comments (to me not a good reviewer)

Just curious who are your favourite reviewer(s) and why. For me, some of the good reviewers are Keshy Dillion, Aiman Abdullah and Sim (iGarage) with English audio dubbing as they cover most of the important aspects of the vehicle during everyday driving such as acceleration power in normal driving conditions, ride and handling, space and legroom of rear passenger, comfort of the suspension etc. and not only evaluating if the vehicle has enough power to tackle the bends during fast and furious drives up Genting Highlands or on the Sepang race tracks.

Bro Wong is also quite interesting as his reviews are pretty honest and different from other reviewers. His most recent review of the Mitsubishi XForce was rather amusing, driving up Genting Highlands in a sedate style and praising on its ride and handling and the absence of 'puke feeling' when tackling the bends. To him, if the driver and passengers feel like vomiting then the car's performance is no good. He also included his kids in his review by getting them to sit in the rear seat. A rather fresh style of reviewing.

1.5L Engine Delivering Higher Output Than 1.6L,

There are differences between the XForce 1.5L sold in Malaysia and XForce 1.6L HEV sold in Thailand. Some of the differences listed below are rather surprising and I am curious if anyone here has some knowledge about the discrepancies especially on the engine output of the 1.5L which seems to be delivering higher output in the torque than the 1.6L engine.

NOTE : The spec and numbers below are from the brochure or website of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia and Thailand.

1. MAX OUTPUT & TORQUE OF THE ENGINE

1.5L Mivec DOHC 16 valve engine:
Displacement (cc) = 1499cc
Max Output kw(PS)/rpm = 77(105)/6,000
Max torque Nm/rpm = 141(4,000)

1.6L Mivec DOHC 16 valve engine:
Displacement (cc) = 1590
Max Output kw(PS)/rpm = 79(107)/6,000
Max torque Nm/rpm = 134(4,500)

Question : Why does the higher capacity 1.6L engine have a lower torque and almost similar max output when compared to the smaller 1.5L engine? I would expect the 1.6L engine to have higher max output and torque than the 1.5L engine.

2. FRONT SUSPENSION

1.5L model = Macpherson Strut
1.6L HEV model = Macpherson Strut coil springs with stabilizer bar and built-in strut bar

Question : Is the suspension of the 1.5L model the same as the 1.6L model with the missing description in the brochure?

3. STEERING

1.5L model = Electronic power steering
1.6L HEV model = Rack & Pinion type with Electronic power steering

Question : Is the steering of the 1.5L model the same as the 1.6L model?

4. GROUND CLEARANCE AND HEIGHT

Ground clearance and height of 1.5L model (mm)= 222/1660
Ground clearance and height of 1.6L HEV model (mm) = 183/1650

Question : The numbers don't add up. The difference in ground clearance is 39mm but the difference in height is 10mm. Any thoughts?
